2026 NCAA Women’s Indoor Track & Field National Championship Preview

3/12/2026 10:00:00 AM

LEXINGTON, Va. - Three Washington and Lee University women's track and field student-athletes will head down to Birmingham, Ala. for the 2026 NCAA Division III Indoor National Championship on March 13-14.

Camille Gillum, Jesma Evans, and Bailey Hedgemon all earned bids to the national meet, marking the second-most selections in program history. It also marks the fourth time in program history that the Blue and White will have multiple representatives at the National Championship. Gillum and Evans are making their second consecutive trip to the indoor national championship after qualifying in the high jump and 400m last season. Bailey Hedgemon earned a berth to the national meet for the first time and will be the first General in program history to compete in the weight throw.

Since 1996, the Generals have sent 16 student-athletes to the national meet, with five climbing the podium to earn First Team All-American honors.

Hedgemon, an Atlanta, Ga. native, will kick off the national meet on Friday in the weight throw. She earned her first bid to the National Championship after recording a program-record toss of 17.37m (56'-11.75"), the 14th-best mark in the field, at the South Region Qualifier last Saturday. Hedgemon, competing in heat one, will square off with 19 of the best weight throwers in Division III this season in hopes of securing All-American honors at 3 p.m. Caitlyn Cox of Loras College leads the field with a mark of 20.33m, while Erika Ezumba (Johns Hopkins), Kayla Behnke (Wis.-Eau Claire), and Lauren Jaklitsch (SUNY Geneseo) have all thrown over 18 meters this season.

Evans, a Chapin, S.C. native, will join Hedgemon in competition on Friday afternoon in the 400m. She qualified for the national meet for the second time in her career after resetting her own program and meet record at the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Championships with a time of 57.00s. Evans' time was converted to 56.26s, the 20th-fastest time in the field, since the National Championship is being held on a banked track. Three runners have times under 55 seconds, including Division III leader Sara Schermerhorn of Hope, who leads the field with a time of 54.54s. Evans is slated to run in heat five in the prelims alongside Kamiyah Wooten (N.C. Wesleyan), Nora Chen (Rochester), and Emily Camlet (Drew). The top eight fastest times in the prelims will move on to the finals, which are set for 4:25 p.m. on Saturday.

Gillum, a Mountain Brook, Ala. native, will round out the Generals at the national meet on Saturday in the high jump. She earned her third straight overall bid to the National Championship and her second to the indoor nationals after posting a qualifying mark of 1.70m (5'-07.00"), tied for the eighth-best mark in the field. Allie Wildsmith of Coast Guard leads the field with a mark of 1.81m, while eight other student-athletes in the field have marks above 1.70m. Gillum and the 19 other high jumpers will all compete at 3:45 p.m. on day two with hopes of earning All-America honors.
