Generals get doubleheader split against No. 25 RMC in ODAC opener

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee baseball team stepped into ODAC play for the first time this season and earned a doubleheader split with No. 25 Randoph-Macon, winning game one, 8-3, and dropping game two, 9-5.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1 (W,  8-3):
  • Both pitchers held the opposing offenses scoreless through the first three innings, before the Generals (4-4, 1-1 ODAC) put up five runs in the bottom of the fourth. First-years Jackson Rogish and Alex Caywood had RBI base hits in the frame with additional runs coming in on a hit by pitch, wild pitch and a ground out.
  • The Yellow Jackets got a run back in the top of the fifth on a Zach Wernoski single, before the Generals scored once more each in the fifth and sixth. Rogish, again, had an RBI knock in the fifth before senior Nick Lagges brought a run home on a sac bunt in the sixth.
  • W&L's final run of game one came home on a passed ball in the eighth, while the Yellow Jackets scored one run in the eighth and ninth. Junior Cooper Charneco pitched into the eighth inning for the Generals before senior Brody Pasieka covered the final six outs.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2 (L, 9-5):
  • The Yellow Jackets scratched the first run of game two across in the first inning when Wernoski scored on a wild pitch. W&L answered with four runs in the bottom half, however, as junior Andrew Thornton and sophomore Camdyn Teague drove in one run each on singles. Caywood scored on an error in the inning and Thornton scored on a ground out.
  • Randolph-Macon locked the Generals' offense down from the second through the eighth, allowing no runs and no hits, while scoring their other eight runs. The Yellow Jackets' scored at least once in each inning except for the fourth and seventh.
  • W&L tried to rally in the ninth when sophomore Oakley Rempel walked with two outs and scored on a Teague double that hit high off the tall fence out in right field. The final out came in the next at-bat, however, on a Rogish deep flyout into the right-center field gap.
TOP PERFORMERS:
  • Teague was the Generals' top hitter of the day, as he knocked two hits in both games to go a combined 4-for-7 with two RBI and a run scored. Rogish had three hits in game one, while Lagges and first-year Nick Caywood combined to go 4-for-8 with three runs and an RBI in the opener.
  • Charneco led the way on the bump in game one, going seven innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits with three walks and nine strikeouts to pick up the win. Pasieka got the final six outs, struck out one and allowed one run.
  • Wernoski totaled five hits across the two games, including four in game two. Carter Schmitt had two hits and walked once in game two and Logan Duff scored a run and had two hits in game one.
  • William Wian was the winning pitcher for the Jackets in the second game, throwing eight innings and allowing four runs (two earned) on four hits with eight strikeouts.
