LEXINGTON, Va. – The No. 19 Washington and Lee women's tennis team improved to 5-0 overall with a 5-2 win over No. 18 Case Western Reserve on Saturday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- First-years Margarette Berdy and Sarah Ladd gave the Generals the advantage in doubles play with a 6-3 win at No. 3. The top two positions were closer, but both ended in favor of W&L. Senior Lauren Long and sophomore Sarah Donnelly (7-5) were at No. 1, with senior Grace Lorenz and sophomore Allie Murrell (7-6 [5]) at No. 2.
- The Spartans (3-1) got that point back at No. 1 singles when Katalina Wang downed Lauren Long, 6-4, 6-4.
- The Generals roared back, however, to claim the next three points to clinch the victory. Donnelly (6-4, 6-1) put the Generals back in the lead at No. 2, Lorenz (7-6 [2], 6-4) won at No. 3, and Murrell (7-6 [5], 6-3) was fired up at No. 4 on her clinching point.
- Berdy put a stamp on the W&L win, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 5, before Gabby Lee outlasted Ladd at No. 6. That match favored the Spartan by a final of 6-7 (4), 7-6 (4), 1-0 (8).
