Baseball’s Late Rally Falls Short in 5-4 loss to Greensboro

ASHEBORO, N.C. - The Washington and Lee University baseball team's late rally fell short as they dropped their second-straight game to Greensboro College 5-4 on Saturday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Generals (0-2) wasted no time as Nathan DeWitte led off the game with a double to left field before moving to third on a sacrifice bunt by Nick Lagges. DeWitte scored the game's first run on a ground out.
  • With one out in the bottom of the first, Christian Glaze drew a walk, advanced on a wild pitch, and swiped third base. Glaze then tied the game at one after coming home on another wild pitch.
  • Greensboro (2-0) put two runners aboard with back-to-back walks to open the bottom of the second inning. With two outs, Glaze ripped a double into left-center field to drive in both runners and give the Pride a 3-1 lead.
  • After scoreless third and fourth innings, Greensboro extended its advantage in the fifth. Evan Sykes singled and Jaycob Caseres walked to begin the frame before both moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. Tyler Alverio drove in Sykes with a single, and Caseres later scored on a sacrifice fly to make it 5-1.
  • The Generals' offense remained quiet until the eighth inning, when Lagges and Alex Caywood reached base via walks. W&L loaded the bases as Nick Caywood singled to center field, and Lagges scored on a wild pitch the next at-bat. With two runners on and two outs, Ian Weber lined a double down the left-field line to drive in two more runs and cut the deficit to one.
  • Garrett Brust entered out of the bullpen and retired the side in order in the ninth, securing the series win for the Pride.
W&L GAME NOTES
  • The Generals fell to 0-2 on the season with the loss, marking the first time dropping the first two games of the season since 2012.
  • Nathan DeWitte led the Generals' offense with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate, including a double. Alex Caywood, Nick Caywood, and Ian Weber each added a hit. Weber drove in a team-high two runs, while Alex Caywood recorded one RBI.
  • Nathan DeWitte (0-1) was charged with the loss after allowing three earned runs on one hit in one inning of work while striking out two batters.
GREENSBORO GAME NOTES
  • Greensboro moved to 2-0 on the season while notching its sixth all-time win over the Generals.
  • Trevor Testerman led the Pride with a 2-for-5 performance at the plate, while Christian Glaze drove in a game-high two RBI. Greensboro had six other players record a hit, and Tyler Alverio and Destin Matthews each drove in one run.
