LEXINGTON, Va. - The ninth-ranked Washington and Lee University women's volleyball remained undefeated this season as they wrapped up the W&L Invitational with wins over St. Mary's College of Maryland and Southern Virginia University on Saturday.
HOW IT HAPPENED vs ST. MARY'S (W&L 3-0 | 25-16, 25-16, 25-3)
- Both teams traded points early in the first set before W&L (7-0) pulled ahead 4-3 following an Erianna Mendieta attacking error. Three straight kills from Riley Debiec and Grace Mitchener sparked a 10-1 run that gave the Generals a double-digit lead. The surge also featured a Nicholson service ace and three more kills from Debiec. A 5-1 stretch pushed the margin to 19-6, highlighted by kills from Emily Schellenberg, Debiec, and Mitchener, along with a Quiles ace. Back-to-back kills from Faith Shockley and Hope Parrish, plus a Stella Marrero service ace, trimmed the deficit, but a Mitchener ace sealed the 25-16 first-set win.
- The Generals took control early in the second set, building a 5-2 lead behind consecutive kills from Debiec and Reese Gilla. The Seahawks (2-2) responded with two points to cut the lead to one, but a St. Mary's error jumpstarted a 5-0 W&L run. The stretch included kills from Gilla and Mitchener, giving the Blue and White a 10-4 lead. Another 5-1 spurt later in the frame extended the advantage to six, with Debiec, Ryan Taylor, and a Debiec/Taylor block leading the charge. W&L closed the set on an 8-2 run, fueled by kills from Schellenberg, Debiec, Gilla, and Mitchener, for a 25-15 win.
- In the third set, Mitchener and Gilla combined for a block on Shockley to ignite a 12-1 run that gave the Generals a commanding lead. The run included kills from Gilla, Nicholson, and Mitchener, as well as a Schellenberg service ace. W&L closed out the sweep with a 13-1 finishing surge, highlighted by three Mitchener kills, two from Debiec, and one from Cara Hamil, securing a 25-8 win.
TOP PERFORMERS
- Debiec led all players with 13 kills on 25 attempts for a .520 hitting percentage, while also contributing two blocks. Mitchener joined her in double figures with 12 kills on 33 attempts for a .333 hitting percentage. Maya Mauro and Alex Williams paced the Seahawks with six kills each.
- First-year Sienna Nicholson directed the offense with a match-high 30 assists, adding nine digs and a service ace. Arielle Lubeck led the Seahawks with 11 assists and eight digs.
- Defensively, Vasquez and Stella Marrero tied for the match lead with 15 digs apiece. Mitchener, Quiles, and Schellenberg also reached double figures in digs, anchoring the Generals' back row in the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED vs SOUTHERN VIRGINIA (W&L 3-1 | 25-17, 25-27, 25-22, 25-11)
- The Generals (7-0) opened the match with a block from Mitchener and Gilla, followed by back-to-back Mitchener kills to take a 3-0 lead. A 7-1 run soon followed, extending the lead to 10 after kills from Mitchener, Debiec, and Schellenberg, along with service aces from Mitchener (2) and Nicholson (1). Southern Virginia (4-3) responded with a 5–1 spurt, fueled by three consecutive kills and a service ace from Summer Hahn, but W&L regained control with an 18–11 lead after two straight Mitchener kills. Schellenberg and Gilla then combined for the final three points of the set, a block on Daisy Oviedo followed by consecutive kills, to secure a 25-19 opening win.
- The second set began with back-and-forth action before two Southern Virginia errors gave the Generals a 6-3 lead. The Knights answered with three straight points and later used a 5-1 run, highlighted by a pair of kills and back-to-back blocks, to take a 14-12 advantage. W&L reclaimed the lead behind two straight Mitchener kills and a solo block from Taylor. The Generals surged ahead 21–18 on a Debiec kill, a Vasquez service ace, and a Debiec/Gilla block. However, Southern Virginia closed on a 4-1 run, capped by back-to-back kills from Aubrey Packer, to steal the set 27-25 and even the match at 1-1.
- In the third, the Knights struck early for a 3-1 lead, but the Generals answered with a 6-1 run highlighted by a Schellenberg kill and several SVU errors to go up 11-6. W&L stretched the margin to 20-14 after consecutive Debiec kills. Though SVU responded with a six-point swing to cut the deficit to 22-21, the Generals closed it out 25-22 on back-to-back Southern Virginia errors.
- The fourth set was tight early, with neither side gaining more than a three-point lead until W&L broke through with a 6-0 run to go ahead 13-5. The surge featured two Debiec kills, one each from Nicholson and Schellenberg, and a pair of Mitchener service aces. After back-to-back SVU points, the Generals answered with a 7-0 run, capped by two service aces and a Schellenberg kill, to stretch the lead to 20-7. Emery Goerig sealed the match with a kill off a Nicholson assist, giving W&L a 25-10 win in the set.
TOP PERFORMERS
- Mitchener and Aubrey Packer shared the match lead with 16 kills apiece, with Mitchener hitting .298 on the night. Debiec also reached double figures, tallying 14 kills on 26 attempts for a .278 hitting percentage.
- First-year Sienna Nicholson set a new match- and career-high with 38 assists, adding 12 digs to notch her second double-double of the season. For Southern Virginia, Talia Quinn and Lucy Richins each recorded 20 or more assists, led by Quinn with 27.
- Defensively, Gracie Fulton and Packer paced SVU with a match-high 21 digs each. Mitchener led the Generals with 16 digs, while Vasquez, Nicholson, Schellenberg, and Quiles all joined her in double figures.
- At the service line, Mitchener led all players with four aces, while Vasquez added three and Nicholson chipped in two.
W&L GAME NOTES
- The Generals remained undefeated, notching their seventh win of the season while dropping just one set. This marks the third straight year that W&L has opened the season undefeated through the first two weekends of play.
- On Saturday, the Blue and White posted 84 kills on 249 attempts with 20 errors for a .257 hitting percentage, highlighted by a season-best .351 clip against St. Mary's. The team also registered 13 service aces, 131 digs, and 10 total blocks on the day.
- Vasquez continued her climb up the program record books, moving into 12th place all-time in career digs with 1,170 after recording 27 on Saturday. Head Coach Bryan Snyder '95 now sits two wins away from career win No. 700 which would make him the sixth active head coach to do so.
