Ninth-ranked Generals Sweep Mary Washington on Day One of W&L Invitational

LEXINGTON, Va. - The ninth-ranked Washington and Lee University women's volleyball team swept the University of Mary Washington in straight sets on the first day of the W&L Invitational.

HOW IT HAPPENED (W&L 3-0 | 25-4, 25-20, 26-24)
  • An Allison Young and Reese Gilla block sparked a 13-1 run for the Generals (5-0), highlighted by four kills from Grace Mitchener, one each from Gilla and Young, and a service ace from Gilla. After Mary Washington (0-5) ended the stretch, W&L rattled off four straight points to take a 17-2 lead, fueled by a Mitchener kill and a solo block from Emery Goerig. The Blue and White closed out the opening frame with a 6-0 run, featuring a Vasquez service ace, kills from Gilla and Riley Debiec, and blocks from Debiec, Gilla, and Ava Gaines, securing a 25-4 first-set win.
  • W&L carried its momentum into the second set, jumping out to a 4-2 lead behind an Emily Schellenberg service ace and a Mitchener kill. The Eagles answered with four straight points to take a 6-4 lead, with Sarah Starling recording a kill and Claire Wortman adding a service ace. After UMW edged ahead 9-8 on a Starling kill, the Generals responded with a 6-1 run to claim a 14-10 lead, highlighted by kills from Gilla and Mitchener, a Nichoson service ace, and a block by Young and Gilla. The Eagles trimmed the margin to one with a 4-1 run, but W&L answered with another 6-1 run, including a Quiles service ace, a Mitchener kill, and four UMW errors, to stretch the lead to 21-15. After trading points down the stretch, a Natalie Brown attacking error gave the Generals a 25-20 second-set victory.
  • The Generals came out firing in the third set, building a 5-1 lead behind a Mitchener kill and Goerig and Mitchener block on Brown. The Eagles battled back to tie the score at 6-6 before using a 6-1 run to grab a 13-11 advantage. Neither team gained more than a one-point edge until W&L strung together four straight points, capped by a Schellenberg service ace and a Mitchener kill, to move ahead 23-20. UMW kept the set alive with a 4-1 run, tying it at 24 with three straight kills from Brown and Holoubek, plus a Brown and Gallahue block. The Generals sealed the sweep with the final two points, capitalizing on back-to-back UMW attacking errors to win the set 26-24 and the match 3-0.

TOP PERFORMERS
  • Mitchener led all players with 15 kills on 37 attempts with just three errors for a .324 hitting percentage, marking her fifth straight match with double-digit kills. Claire Wortman paced the Eagles with six kills on 17 attempts.
  • UMW's Olivia Fortier and W&L's Nichoson tied for the match lead with 15 assists. Nicholson also added a service ace and four digs.
  • Schellenberg recorded a match-high three service aces, while Nicholson, Vasquez, Gilla, and Quiles each added one for the Generals. Fortier, Sydney Aiken, and Wortman contributed one apiece for the Eagles.
  • Aiken anchored the UMW defense with a match-high 13 digs, while Schellenberg led the Generals with 10.
  • At the net, Gilla and Goerig led W&L with three blocks each. Gallahue, Brown, and Holoubek also tallied three blocks apiece for the Eagles.

W&L GAME NOTES
  • The Generals improved to 5–0 on the season with their fifth straight sweep, extending their winning streak in Holekamp Gym to eight matches dating back to October 18 of last year.
  • W&L recorded 10 kills in each set, highlighted by a match-best .450 hitting percentage in the opening frame. Overall, the Generals tallied 30 kills on 97 attempts with 11 errors for a .196 hitting percentage.
  • Vasquez continued her climb up the career digs list, moving her total to 1,143. She now sits at No. 13 all-time and is just four digs shy of passing Sydney Heifner '24 for 12th-most in program history.
