FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - The 11th-ranked Washington and Lee University women's volleyball team picked up a pair of wins this afternoon, downing the University of Mary Washington in four sets before sweeping Gettysburg College.
HOW IT HAPPENED vs MARY WASHINGTON (W&L 3-1, 25-15. 25-23, 22-25, 25-18)
- The Generals (13-2) jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first set behind back-to-back kills from Grace Mitchener and Reese Gilla, combined with a pair of Mary Washington (4-12) errors. After the Eagles cut the lead to one, the Blue and White responded with eight unanswered points to extend their advantage to nine. Mitchener sparked the run with a kill and added two service aces, while Cara Hamil, Gilla, and Vivi Vasquez each contributed a kill during the stretch. Mary Washington answered with a 7-3 run to trim the deficit to five, but W&L countered with a 6-1 run of their own. Kills from Mitchener and Emery Goerig, along with a block by the duo, fueled the surge. Gilla sealed the first set with a kill off a Sienna Nichoson assist, giving the Generals a 25-15 win.
- The second set began with both teams trading points until back-to-back kills from Gilla and Riley Debiec put W&L ahead, 12-11. Mary Washington responded with a 6-1 run to take a 16-13 lead. The Generals battled back, exchanging points with the Eagles until a three-point swing tied the set at 22—highlighted by an Allison Young kill and a Penelope Quiles service ace. Clutch kills from Young and Mitchener, along with a UMW error, secured the 25-23 second-set win for the Generals.
- In the third set, a pair of kills from Mitchener and one from Gilla tied the frame at three before Mary Washington pulled away with a 7-1 run to go up 10-4. The teams continued trading points, with the Eagles maintaining at least a six-point lead. W&L mounted a late rally, cutting the deficit to one with a 7-1 run fueled by kills from Hamil and Debiec and a block from Goerig and Debiec. However, Natalie Brown closed the set for Mary Washington with a kill, forcing a fourth frame.
- UMW's Avery Gallahue opened the fourth set with a kill, but the Generals answered with five straight points to take a 5-1 lead. Mitchener tallied two kills, Hamil added one, and Emily Schellenberg capped the run with a service ace. Mary Washington battled back to tie the set at six but W&L surged again to take an 11-7 lead behind a pair of Mitchener kills and a solo block, a Hamil kill, and a Nichoson ace. Both teams exchanged points down the stretch until a 4-1 Eagles run cut the Generals' lead to one. W&L responded with six unanswered points to close out the match, winning the fourth set 25-18. Hamil and Debiec each recorded a kill during the final stretch, and Goerig punctuated the win by stuffing Gallahue at the net.
TOP PERFORMERS
- Mitchener led all scorers with 15 kills on 55 swings with just four errors, finishing with a .200 hitting percentage. She also tallied 15 digs to record her sixth double-double of the season. Hamil added 11 kills in the win, posting a .176 hitting percentage.
- Nichoson dished out 34 assists—her fourth match this season with 30 or more assists. Vivi Vasquez anchored the defense with a team-high 22 digs, while Mitchener (15), Nichoson (14), and Quiles (11) each recorded double-digit digs.
- At the net, Goerig contributed four total blocks (two solo, two assisted), and Gilla added three blocks, including two solo efforts.
HOW IT HAPPENED vs GETTYSBURG (W&L 3-0, 26-24, 25-19, 25-23)
- Debiec and Mitchener opened the first set with back-to-back kills, helping the Generals establish an early 3-1 lead. After the Bullets (8-6) tied the match at four W&L responded with a 4-1 run, thanks to kills from Gilla, Hamil, and Debiec, along with a Gilla service ace, to reclaim a two-point edge. The teams traded points for much of the set until the Blue and White closed on a 5-1 run to take the first frame, 26-24. The run featured a Hamil kill, a block by Goerig and Hamil, and three consecutive service aces by Schellenberg to seal the set.
- W&L opened the second set with a 5-3 run, getting two kills from Debiec and one each from Hamil and Goerig. Three straight Gettysburg errors and a Lexie Stone service ace pushed the Generals' lead to 13-10. An ensuing 5-1 run extended the margin to six, featuring kills from Mitchener, Hamil, and Debiec, as well as a service ace by Allison Young. The teams continued to trade points until Hamil closed the set with a kill, giving the Generals a 25-19 win.
- The third set began with a Nichoson service ace, but Gettysburg responded with a 5-1 run to take a 5-2 lead. W&L quickly regained control with a 9-1 run, highlighted by kills from Goerig, Debiec, and Mitchener, along with a solo block from Hamil, putting the Generals ahead 11-6. A Debiec kill later extended the lead to 17-11, but the Bullets answered with a 7-2 run to cut the margin to one. The Generals responded with a strong 5-2 finish, including three Mitchener kills and a service ace by L. Stone, to clinch the set 25-23 and complete the sweep.
TOP PERFORMERS
- Mitchener recorded her second double-double of the day and seventh of the season, tallying 15 kills on 41 attempts with no errors for a .366 hitting percentage. Debiec added 10 kills on 18 swings with just one error, finishing with a .500 hitting percentage.
- Nichoson dished out 32 assists in the sweep, adding eight digs and a service ace. Vasquez led all players with 23 digs—her sixth match this season with 20 or more. Mitchener (12) and Quiles (10) also recorded double-digit digs in the win.
- Goerig added three blocks, including two solo efforts, while Hamil contributed two blocks with one solo. Schellenberg led the match with three service aces, and Lexie Stone added two.
W&L GAME NOTES
- With the wins, the Generals improve to 13–2 on the season, snapping a two-match losing streak. They earned their third consecutive victory over Mary Washington and defeated Gettysburg for the second straight meeting.
- W&L totaled 88 kills on 288 swings with 36 errors for a .180 hitting percentage across the two matches. The team recorded 47 kills with a .153 hitting percentage against Mary Washington, followed by 41 kills on a .216 clip against Gettysburg.
