No. 15 Volleyball Downs Guilford in Straight Sets

LEXINGTON, Va. - The 15th-ranked Washington and Lee University volleyball team kicked off the weekend with an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) sweep, downing Guilford College in straight sets on Friday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED (W&L 3-0, 25-21, 25-16, 25-10)
  • The Generals (14-2, 3-2 ODAC) jumped out to an early 7-1 lead thanks to four kills from Grace Mitchener and one each from Emery Goerig and Sienna Nichoson. W&L's advantage continued to grow, as a 5-1 run extended the lead to 13-5 midway through the first set. Riley Debiec led the charge with three consecutive kills before Emily Schellenberg added another to cap the run. A subsequent 4-1 stretch pushed the lead to ten, fueled by a pair of kills from Nichoson and one from Goerig.
  • The Quakers (7-6, 2-3 ODAC) responded late in the first set with six unanswered points to cut the deficit to three. Mitchener and Debiec stopped the momentum with back-to-back kills to put the Generals up 22-17, but Guilford answered with a 4-1 run to keep it close. W&L secured the first set 25-21 with a Schellenberg kill followed by a Guilford attacking error.
  • The second set began with both teams trading points, tied at 4-4, before the Generals pulled ahead 8-5 with a 4-1 run that included kills from Goerig and Mitchener and two Guilford errors. W&L extended the lead with a 6-2 run, powered by three kills from Debiec and a pair from Schellenberg. A 5-1 burst widened the margin to 19-10, with kills from Schellenberg, Mitchener, and a block by Goerig and Nichoson. Though Guilford responded with a 5-1 run of their own to trim the lead to 20-15, the Generals closed the set strong, finishing on a 5-1 run that included kills from Reese Gilla and Debiec, a block by the pair, and two Nichoson service aces.
  • In the third set, after Guilford tied things at 4-4 on a Kaci Johnson kill, W&L went on a 12-1 run to take a 16-5 lead. Mitchener led the surge with five kills, while Goerig and Diane Pierre-Louis each added one. The Generals followed with a 6-1 run that stretched the lead to 22-6, highlighted by a block from Gilla and Mitchener and kills from Schellenberg and Mitchener. W&L wrapped up the match with three straight points—Schellenberg tallied a kill, and Allison Young sealed the sweep with a service ace.
