LEXINGTON, Va. - The 15th-ranked Washington and Lee University women's volleyball team split their Saturday matches, defeating Averett University in straight sets before falling to Christopher Newport in four sets.
HOW IT HAPPENED vs AVERETT (W&L 3-0, 25-10, 25-14, 25-8)
- The Generals (15-2, 4-2 ODAC) took an early 5-2 lead in the first set thanks to a pair of kills from Grace Mitchener and one from Emery Goerig. An ensuing 8–1 run gave the Blue and White a commanding 13-4 advantage. The run featured two kills each from Riley Debiec and Emily Schellenberg, a kill from Sienna Nichoson, and a service ace from Allison Young. Another 8-1 stretch extended the Generals' lead to 22-7, highlighted by three kills from Schellenberg, a Penelope Quiles service ace, and blocks by Nichoson, Ryan Taylor, and Mitchener. W&L claimed the first set 25-10 after Cara Hamil registered a kill and Caroline Natwick and Reese Gilla stuffed an Emily Phillips attack.
- After the Cougars (2-12, 0-6 ODAC) opened the scoring the second set, the Blue and White responded with a 4-1 run featuring two kills from Gilla, one from Debiec, and a service ace from Mitchener. With the match tied at six, the Generals went on a 9-1 run to build a 15-7 lead. The surge included four kills from Mitchener, two kills and a service ace from Schellenberg, a kill from Nichoson, and a service ace from Lexie Stone. W&L held a 23-11 advantage following a seven-point run that featured kills from Mitchener, Gilla, and Schellenberg, along with a block by Debiec and Gilla. Back-to-back Cougars errors secured a 25-14 second-set win for the Generals.
- In the third set, two service aces from Nichoson and two kills from Debiec helped W&L jump out to a 4-0 lead. A dominant 9-1 run followed, extending the lead to 13-3. That stretch featured three kills from Debiec, one each from Schellenberg and Goerig, a Gilla service ace, and a block by Goerig and Debiec. After Averett's Rachel Green landed a kill, the Generals answered with a 7-1 run to take a 20-5 lead, highlighted by two kills from Goerig and one each from Debiec and Diane Pierre-Louis. An Allison Young kill and a Cougars' attacking error sealed the sweep for the Blue and White.
TOP PERFORMERS
- Debiec led all scorers with 10 kills on 21 swings with only two errors, finishing with a .381 hitting percentage. Sydney Mounce led the Cougars with five kills on 23 attempts.
- Sienna Nichoson dished out 23 assists in the win, adding two service aces and 11 digs. Dayton Moore paced the Cougars with 10 assists and 10 digs.
- Vivi Vasquez posted a match-high 19 digs while also contributing six assists. Kyleigh Rains led Averett with 16 digs, and Kadence Woodlief added 12.
- Debiec and Reese Gilla each recorded three blocks, with six other Generals registering at least one block.
- Nichoson led all players with two service aces, while six other Generals recorded one ace apiece.
HOW IT HAPPENED vs CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT (CNU 3-1, 21-25, 23-25, 25-21, 20-25)
- The Generals took a 4-2 advantage after a 4-1 run early in the first set, featuring kills from Gilla and Schellenberg. Three unanswered points from the Captains (12-6) gave them a 5-4 lead, and back-and-forth action followed, with the first set eventually tied at nine. After a kill by Mitchener, Christopher Newport rattled off four straight points to take a 12-9 lead. However, the Blue and White responded with a 7-1 run to reclaim a 15-13 advantage. The run included kills from Schellenberg and Debiec, along with a block by Gilla and Debiec. The teams continued to trade points until the Captains closed the set on a 6-1 run to take the first frame, 25-21.
- Goerig secured the first point of the second set with a kill before the Captains went on a 9-1 run to take control. The Generals chipped away, cutting the deficit to four after two CNU attacking errors and a Mitchener kill. The teams continued to trade points through the middle of the set until the Blue and White rallied with a 6-1 run to tie the score at 23. The run featured three kills from Schellenberg and one from Debiec. However, back-to-back kills from Emmy Carpenedo gave Christopher Newport the 25-23 set win and a 2-0 match lead.
- The third set opened with both teams exchanging points until two kills from Schellenberg and one from Mitchener put W&L ahead 7-4. CNU responded with a 3-0 run to tie the set at 9, but the Generals answered with a 5-2 stretch to go up 16-12, thanks to two kills from Debiec and one each from Gilla and Goerig. W&L extended their lead to 21-14 with a 4-0 run, highlighted by a Goerig kill and a Schellenberg service ace. The Captains fought back with four straight points to cut the deficit to three, but Debiec closed out the set with a kill, forcing a fourth set.
- Simara Alexander opened the fourth frame with a kill for CNU, but a service error sparked a 3-0 W&L run that included a kill from Addi Johnson and a service ace from Vivi Vasquez. The Captains quickly responded with a 5-1 run to reclaim the lead, but the Generals answered with four unanswered points, fueled by two kills from Debiec and two CNU errors. The set remained tight with neither team gaining a large edge until the Captains surged ahead with a 7-1 run to take a 21-17 lead. Debiec halted the run with a kill, but CNU closed out the match with a 4-2 run to secure the four-set victory.
TOP PERFORMERS
- Alyssa Dozier of CNU posted a match-high 24 kills on 46 swings with just four errors, finishing with a .435 hitting percentage. Simara Alexander and Samantha Dorn each added 15 kills for the Captains. Riley Debiec led the Generals with 13 kills on 29 attempts, hitting an impressive .448. Grace Mitchener and Emily Schellenberg also recorded double-digit kills.
- Fielding Croft paced the Captains with 60 assists and added 12 digs. Addi Johnson dished out 29 assists in the loss for the Generals and contributed two kills.
- Vivi Vasquez posted a match-high 29 digs, marking her seventh match this season with 20 or more. Mitchener (16), Penelope Quiles (15), and Schellenberg (15) also recorded double-digit digs.
- Dozier led the match with five blocks, while Reese Gilla recorded a team-high two blocks for W&L. Vasquez, Fielding Croft, and Simara Alexander each notched two service aces.
W&L GAME NOTES
- The Generals improved to 15-3 on the season with a 4-2 mark in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play. The win marked their fourth straight victory over Averett, moving the all-time series to 28-10 in favor of the Generals.
- The Blue and White recorded 87 kills on 279 attempts with 27 errors for a .215 hitting percentage, averaging 12.43 kills per set. They also tallied 12 service aces and 11 blocks.
