BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The 11th-ranked Washington and Lee University women's volleyball team dropped their second-straight Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) match of the season, falling to Bridgewater College in straight sets on Wednesday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED (BC 3-0, 21-25, 21-25, 14-25)
- Bridgewater (10-4, 3-1 ODAC) opened the match on a 5-3 run to take an early lead. That lead quickly expanded as the Eagles went on a commanding 12-2 run to go up 18-7. The Generals (11-2, 2-2 ODAC) responded with a 10-1 scoring stretch to cut the deficit to just two points. The run featured four kills from Grace Mitchener and one each from Cara Hamil and Emery Goerig. W&L continued to battle, going on a 4-1 run highlighted by three more kills from Mitchener and one from Debiec. However, Bridgewater closed out the first set with four unanswered points to take the frame, 25-21.
- The Blue and White jumped out to a 5-2 lead early in the second set, capitalizing on three Eagles errors and kills from Mitchener and Debiec. Bridgewater responded with a 6–1 run to take their first lead of the set at 10–8. After both teams traded points, the Eagles went on a 4-1 spurt—featuring a pair of blocks—to grab a 16-12 advantage. The Generals quickly responded with a 5-1 stretch to tie the set at 17, fueled by four kills from Hamil. A pair of errors by the Eagles helped W&L cut the lead to 23-21, but a kill from Faith DePew followed by a Generals attacking error sealed the second set for Bridgewater, 25-21.
- The third set opened with back-and-forth action, as neither team led by more than one point until Bridgewater went on a 5-1 run to pull ahead 11–8. A subsequent 6–1 burst extended the Eagles' lead to 18-11. A service error by Bridgewater and a kill by Hamil briefly cut the deficit to five, but BC closed out the match on a 7-1 run to complete the sweep of the Generals.
