Joseph claims program shutouts record, W&L tops Roanoke in midweek action

LEXINGTON, Va. – Senior goalkeeper Will Joseph broke the Washington and Lee men's soccer program record for career shutouts on Wednesday in a 2-0 win against Roanoke behind a pair of first-half goals.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Joseph made two saves on the night to post the 25th clean sheet of his career. His first came in easy fashion in the 67th minute, while his second was a much higher degree of difficulty in the 81st minute. He laid out to his right to punch a shot just wide of the post to preserve a 2-0 lead.
  • The Generals (2-2-3) took an early lead when Buster Couhig found the back of the net in the seventh minute. Junior Matthew Jenkins sent a pass in from the right that the Roanoke (6-2) defense tried to clear. But the ball came right to Couhig who quickly flicked the ball towards the goal and inside the right post.
  • In the 25th minute, a Generals throw-in in the attacking third made its way into the box and to junior Spencer Furman. Furman tried his luck on a shot but had his attempt blocked. First-year Sami Seife was there, however, to clean it up and put the ball past the keeper for the 2-0 lead.

TOP PERFORMERS:
  • Couhig netted his team-leading third goal of the season, with Seife's score going as his second of the year. Furman picked up his first assist of the season on Seife's goal.
  • Couhig took a game-high four shots, with Jenkins and Seife following at three attempts each.
  • Joseph's two second-half saves were enough for him to claim the shutout in the W&L goal. His counterpart, Aidan McHugh, also made two saves across 90 minutes of action.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Joseph's clean sheet on Wednesday marked the 25th in his career, surpassing the previous top mark of 24 set by Michael Nyc '22.
  • Wednesday's game between the Generals and Maroons was designated as a non-conference game to help both teams fill out their schedules. The two sides will meet again on Saturday, October 11, with that result impacting the ODAC standings.
  • The Generals have scored exactly two goals in five consecutive games against the Maroons, going 3-1-1 in that time.

TEAM STATS
  • The Generals finished the game with a 17-4 advantage in shot attempts, which included a 9-0 mark in the first half.
  • W&L also ended the night having taken 12 of the 16 corner kicks in the game.

UP NEXT:
The Generals will return to the pitch on Saturday when they host Eastern Mennonite at 3:30 p.m. for their first ODAC game of the season.
