The Generals and Quakers meet for the 38th time in program history at Wilson Field on Saturday Evening

LEXINGTON, Va. - The Washington and Lee University football team opens up Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play on Saturday as they welcome Guilford College to Wilson Field for a 4 p.m. match up.

Series History:
The Generals and Quakers have met 37 times in program history, with the Blue and White holding a 23–14 advantage in the series. W&L has won eight of the last 10 meetings, including each of the last five. In those five victories, the Generals have outscored Guilford 234–75, scoring 40 or more points in four of those contests.

Last season, the Blue and White piled up 340 yards of offense on just 42 plays, averaging 8.1 yards per play, in a win over the Quakers. W&L rushed for 266 yards on 38 carries (7.0 yards per rush) with four touchdowns, despite holding the ball for only 16 minutes—their lowest time of possession of the season.

Jacob Romero '25 led the rushing attack with 15 carries for 110 yards and two touchdowns, while junior Ty Collins added 102 yards on 11 carries (9.3 avg) and a touchdown. For Guilford, quarterback Caleb Robles went 25-of-35 for 244 yards and two touchdowns, while also leading the Quakers in rushing with 67 yards. Jay Daniels hauled in a game-high nine receptions for 93 yards and a score.

Defensively, Jalen Todd '25 turned in a career-high 22 tackles, including two tackles for loss and two sacks. Jack Johnson intercepted Robles and added four tackles, while senior Malik Hardy joined Todd with two tackles for loss.


Scouting the Quakers:
The Quakers head into week three with a 1-1 record after dropping their season opener, 21-7, to Greensboro College in the 24th Annual Soup Bowl before bouncing back with a 42-40 win at Methodist on Sept. 13. Against the Monarchs, Guilford built a 28–14 halftime lead but was outscored 26-14 in the second half. The Quakers finished with 432 yards of offense, including 357 passing yards and four touchdowns through the air.

Wide receiver Shane Shapiro paced the attack with a career-high 14 receptions for 210 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Luke Hyatt completed 23-of-32 passes (68%) for 262 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions. Backup Nick Danciu was a perfect 6-for-6 for 95 yards and a score. On the ground, Evan Sullivan carried 15 times for 52 yards and a touchdown, while Malik Woodard added 24 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries.


Defensively, Guilford surrendered 306 total yards but held Methodist to just 60 rushing yards. Nick Iannone led the unit with nine tackles (seven solo), two tackles for loss, and one sack. Travis Burton added eight stops with a game-high 3.5 tackles for loss, while Tristan Bailey recorded an interception and a pass breakup.


Scouting the Generals:
The Generals are off to an 0-2 start for the first time since 2014 after falling to No. 7 Salisbury University (42-21) and Wittenberg University (24-21). At Wittenberg, the Blue and White tallied 398 yards of total offense on 85 plays, highlighted by 265 rushing yards on 64 carries. They added 133 passing yards and two touchdowns while dominating time of possession, holding the ball for 39:54—nearly two-thirds of the game.

Junior quarterback Ty Collins completed 13-of-20 passes (65%) for 133 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. He also added 26 rushing yards on eight carries. Junior running back Anthony Crawford led all rushers with a career-high 177 yards and one touchdown on 38 carries, averaging 4.7 yards per attempt. Senior Ian Evans and junior Teddy Sparrow each caught a touchdown pass in the loss.


Defensively, W&L allowed 305 yards of total offense, including 214 yards through the air at an average of 12.9 yards per completion with two passing touchdowns. Senior captain Will Mahmud anchored the defense with a team-high 14 tackles, three solo. Sophomore Brennan Stout reached double digits for the first time in his career with 10 tackles. Randolph Smith added the Generals' lone sack, bringing down JJ Miller for a 15-yard loss.


National Top-25 Polls:

North Central (Ill.) still leads both polls, receiving 22 first place votes in the D3football.com poll and all 55 first place votes in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) poll. Mount Union is still slated at No. 2 in both polls with Johns Hopkins remaining as the third-ranked team in Division III according to both polls. Susquehanna and St. John's still sit in fourth and fifth, respectively, in the D3football.com poll with St. John's ranked as No. 4 and Susquehanna as No. 5 in the coaches' poll.

National Statistical Rankings:
Anthony Crawford ranks eighth in Division III so far this season in rushing yards with 316 while also ranking 10th in rushing yards per game, averaging 158.0 yards. He also ranks 25th in the country in All-purpose yards.

The Generals rushing unit ranks 33rd in Division III this season after averaging 222.0 yards per game on the ground through the first two weeks of the season. They also rank 49th in the country in sacks allowed, only allowing Collins to be sacked one time so far this season.

Around the ODAC:
Eight of the ODAC's nine football programs were active in Saturday contests with Gallaudet the only outfit idle on a scheduled bye. Conference teams went 4-4 in the final week of full non-conference play, leaving three schools – Hampden-Sydney, Roanoke, Shenandoah – unbeaten at 2-0 atop the league table.
