W&L flexes in singles play against Captains to close CNU Invite

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's tennis team wrapped up play at the Christopher Newport Invite on Sunday, with four wins in singles to highlight the day.
 
HIGHLIGHTS FROM DAY 2:
  • Senior Grace Lorenz and first-year Sarah Ladd were both straight-set victors in singles play. Lorenz downed Kendal Chang 6-2, 7-6 (7), while Ladd topped Lindsey Bergelin 6-4, 7-6 (4).
  • Senior Annie Jennings and first-year Margarette Berdy also picked up singles wins for the Blue and White, both doing so in 10-point, third-set tiebreaks. Jennings dropped her first set, 4-6, before battling back in the second, 6-2, and taking the match 10-5 in the break against Eva Taylor. Berdy and Kylie Schaefer both won a set 6-2 before Berdy earned the win, 10-7.
  • Berdy and Ladd paired in doubles play and nearly won there, as well, but Emma Carver and Erin Gross won in a tiebreak, 7-6 (5).
  • The Captains won all three doubles matches on the day and picked up an additional win in singles play, as Scarlett Gamez defeated senior Riho Iijima 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (6).

The Generals will recover and prepare for the ITA Southeast Region Championships at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Va., from September 27-29
