McEwen Leads Gate City Invite, No. 2 Men’s Golf Sits in Third after 36 Holes

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Junior Jonathan McEwen of the second-ranked Washington and Lee University men's golf team holds a solo lead at the Gate City Invite while the team sits in third after 36 holes of action at Forest Oaks Country Club.

The Blue and White sit in a tie for third place out of 18 teams after rounds of 285 (–3) and 288 (E) to open play. The Generals are four shots back of leader Sewanee, which carded a 285 (–3) in round one and a 284 (–4) in round two.


W&L played the front nine at three-under par across the two rounds while shooting even par on the back nine. Only nine teams finished a round under par on Monday, with Oglethorpe posting the tournament's best round—a 273 (–15) in round two—after all four scorers finished under par.

INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS
  • Junior Jonathan McEwen leads both the Generals and the field at eight-under par (136). He tied the program record for lowest round with a 64 (-8) in the opening round, highlighted by two eagles, five birdies, and 10 pars before shooting even par in round two with an eagle, birdie and 13 pars. McEwen leads the field in par-5 scoring with a 4.13 average (-7) and in total eagles (3). He also ranks tied for fourth in par-3 scoring (2.88, -1) and tied for eighth in par-4 scoring (4.00, E).
  • Sophomore Tim Kaufman sits in a tie for 11th at two-under par (142). Kaufman shot an even-par 72 in the first round with three birdies, then followed with a 70 (–2) in round two, carding four birdies and 12 pars. He ranks fourth in par-5 scoring (4.38, –5) and tied for 12th in par-3 scoring (3.00, E).
  • Sophomore Charlie Krasnewich is tied for 27th at two-over par (146). He opened with an even-par 72, posting two birdies and 14 pars, before recording a 74 (+2) in round two with two more birdies. Krasnewich is tied for 25th in par-5 scoring (4.75, –2) and tied for eighth in total pars with 26.
  • Senior captain Turner Edwards is tied for 55th at seven-over par (149). He carded a 79 (+7) in the first round with one birdie and nine pars, but rebounded with an even-par 70 in round two, highlighted by four birdies and 10 pars.
  • First-year William Hull rounded out the Generals' lineup at nine-over par (153), sitting in a tie for 67th. Hull posted a 77 (+5) in round one with one birdie before following with a 76 (+4) in round two, collecting two birdies and 12 pars.
