LEXINGTON, Va. – Washington and Lee University Head Men's Lacrosse Coach
Gene McCabe has announced the promotion of Offensive Coordinator
Will Garrett '13 to Assistant Head Coach.
"We are thrilled to announce Will Garrett's promotion to Assistant Head Coach," McCabe commented. "As our offensive coordinator, Will has consistently led one of the most productive and efficient offenses in the country. His exceptional talent, creativity, and dedication have made a significant impact on our team's success. Will's deep connection to our program, as an alum and someone who has demonstrated unwavering loyalty and passion, makes this promotion even more meaningful. I'm grateful for his ongoing commitment to the Generals Lacrosse program, and I look forward to seeing him continue to excel in his new roles as Assistant Head Coach and Director of Recruiting."
With his promotion, Garrett will continue his duties coordinating the Generals' offensive efforts throughout the year, while he will take on the role of Director of Recruiting for the program. Garrett, a 2013 graduate from Washington and Lee University, returned to his alma mater ahead of the 2023 season as an assistant coach, before he was promoted to Offensive Coordinator prior to the start of the 2024 campaign
"It is an incredible honor to be named Assistant Head Coach of Men's Lacrosse at Washington and Lee — a place that means so much to me," stated Garrett. "I want to thank
Jan Hathorn and Coach McCabe for their belief in me and for the opportunity to take on a greater role within a program with such rich tradition. I know how much this program means to our alumni, and I share their vision of building a team capable of competing for a national championship — while also developing the kind of young men who will lead with character long after they leave campus."
Under Garrett's coaching, the W&L offense has had some of its most prolific scoring seasons in program history. In his first season, the Generals set the program record for goals in a season with 403 (17.5 per game), which shattered the previous record of 329 goals scored in 2019. In fact, each of the top-three single-season goal totals in program history have come during each of Garrett's three seasons, including three of the top four goals-per-game averages.
Garrett and the Generals have surged into the national spotlight over the last three seasons, as well. Consistently ranked within the USILA, Inside Lacrosse and USA Lacrosse Magazine polls, W&L's high-flying offensive production over the last three seasons has led to an NCAA Semifinal finish in 2024, a quarterfinal appearance in 2023, ODAC titles in 2025 and 2023 and records of 51-15 overall and 26-2 in ODAC play.
Garrett continued, "I'm excited for what's ahead and I am fully invested in helping this group reach its full potential. I also want to thank my wife, Elyse, for her constant support — none of this would be possible without her."
