No. 39 Generals advance past Virginia Wesleyan in ODAC semifinals

LEXINGTON, Va. – The No. 39 and top-seeded Washington and Lee women's tennis team cruised to a 4-0 win over No. 4 seed Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday in the semifinal round of the 2025 ODAC Championship.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Juniors Lauren Long and Grace Lorenz, the eighth-ranked doubles team in the Atlantic South Region, got the Generals (16-5) off to a strong start with a 6-0 win at No. 1. First-years Sarah Donnelly and Allie Murrell took a 5-0 lead at No. 2, before Virginia Wesleyan's (10-9) Mikisha Thomas and Zoe Vliegen fought back to take the next two games. However, Donnelly and Murrell claimed the doubles point for W&L with a deuce point in the next game.

At No. 3 doubles, juniors Isabella Custard and Annie Jennings held a slight 2-1 lead over Sarah Reich and Lina Hackner, before cushioning their lead up to 5-2 when Donnelly and Murrell finished at No. 2.

The Generals finished off their win quickly in singles to punch their ticket to Sunday's conference title match with Donnelly (4), Long (1) and Murrell (2) clinching the remaining team points. Donnelly won all 12 games she played, Long dropped her first game before rattling off 12 straight games, while Murrell surrendered two first-set games before also posting a 6-0 score in the second.

With the match being played indoors, Lorenz was the only other General to compete in singles. She led Lina Hackner 6-3, 5-1at No. 3 when the match was clinched. Jennings and junior Riho Iijima were slated to play in singles No. 5 and No. 6.
