DANVILLE, Va. – The No. 10 Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team posted its second shutout in its last four games in a 28-0 win at Averett on Friday in its return to action.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Generals (12-3, 8-0 ODAC) scored eight goals in the first and third quarters, and six goals in the second and fourth quarters to log its second shutout of at least 28 goals this month. Senior
Hillis Burns led the first-quarter scoring with three tallies, with five other Generals scoring one goal each. The second quarter featured a balanced attack, as well, with all six goals coming from six different players.
First-year
Jack Dalton (2) was the lone W&L player with multiple goals in the eight-goal third quarter, with juniors
Byron Newman and
Jack Booth both contributing two points in the period on a goal and an assist. First-year
Avery Richardson then highlighted the fourth quarter with three goals, while senior
Gavin McClernan added three points of his own on a goal and two helpers.
TOP PERFORMERS:
Booth and Irmscher notched a team-high six points apiece, with Irmscher at a goal and five assists and Booth at two goals and four assists. Dalton, Newman and senior
Riley Albregts all scored three times and had an assist, while junior
James Haley, McClernan and Burns all totaled three points.
First-year
Jax Lou was the standout for the Generals on face-offs, as he won 24-of-25 with nine ground balls. Sophomore
Tyler Spano got in the game for six face-offs, winning all six, while Booth added a face-off win on his only attempt with a ground ball. Twelve different Generals all caused one turnover, with junior
Jay Seevers and first-year
Charlie Hodulik leading that bunch with three ground balls.
All five W&L goalies saw time in goal on Friday, but, with the W&L defensive unit limiting the Cougars to just three shots on goal, only junior
Ryan Boyd made saves, stopping all three.
Averett's Ty Pearson led with three ground balls plus two each for Robbie Isenhour and Connor Boyd. Isenhour played 45 minutes in goal and made 19 saves.
NOTEWORTHY POINTS:
Friday's victory over the Cougars moved the Generals to 3-0 all-time in the head-to-head series. The Generals own an 87-1 scoring margin in those three games, including a pair of 28-0 wins.
Three more points for Burns on Friday night moved him into sole possession of third place on the program's all-time points list (236). Burns entered the game one point behind Don Carroll '76, with Matt Dugan '01 next on the list with 290 points.
TEAM STATS:
The Generals outshot the Cougars 68-10 overall in the game, including 50-3 in shots on goal. The Cougars turned the ball over 29 times to 15 for the Blue and White, while W&L held a 50-12 advantage in ground balls.

The Generals will be back in action on Wednesday night when they play at Roanoke at 7:00 p.m. in their final road game of the regular season.
