Gillum, 4x400m Relay Highlight Day One of W&L Carnival

LEXINGTON, Va. - Camille Gillum and the 4x400m relay team highlighted the first day of the W&L Carnival for the Washington and Lee University women's track and field team as they reset program records in their respective events.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE MEET
  • A pair of program records fell on the first day of the Carnival as Camille Gillum cleared a program-record height of 1.64m en route to a first-place finish in the high jump. Ana Hodneland, Annabelle Sutliff, Amanda Romano, and Jesma Evans took down a ten-year-old record in the 4x400m relay, clocking a time of 3:59.04 and becoming the first 4x400m relay team in program history to run under four minutes.
  • Sophia Breschi recorded a new personal best in the 5,000m run, posting a time of 17:28.24, which ranks third in program history, to finish in first place. Claire Hamlet joined Breschi in the 5k, finishing in eighth place with a time of 18:11.93.
  • Charlotte Gardner secured a first-place finish in the unseeded 1,500m, posting a winning time of 5:00.42. Lane Smith finished right behind Gardner in second place, crossing the finish line in 5:06.56. Hannah Kowkabany and Sofia Petrucelli turned in fourth- and seventh-place finishes in the unseeded 1,500m, posting times of 5:10.87 and 5:13.04, respectively.
  • Emma Mitchell highlighted the invited 1,500m this afternoon, finishing in second place with a time of 4:43.56, the eighth-fastest time in program history. Mimi Kemp and Reese Brown finished back-to-back in fifth and sixth place, crossing the finish line in 4:50.37 and 4:51.20, respectively. Brenna Luczak rounded out the Generals in the 1,500m, turning in an eighth-place finish with a time of 4:52.04.
  • Bailey Hedgemon was the top finisher for the Blue and White in the hammer throw, finishing in sixth place with a mark of 45.40m. Hedgemon also placed sixth in the discus, posting a mark of 32.97m, while Emily Jackson finished right behind her in seventh with a mark of 32.65m.
  • W&L had three top-eight finishers in the long jump to kick off the year, with Lilly Versen leading the group. Versen finished in third place after leaping 5.18m, which ranks eighth in program history. Madelyn Venable and Bella Devraj finished back-to-back in sixth and seventh place, with Venable recording a mark of 5.08m and Devraj leaping 5.06m.
  • Simone Kasischke rounded out the top-eight finishers for the Blue and White with a sixth-place finish in the high jump, clearing a height of 1.49m.

  • Camille Gillum kicked off the Carnival in record-breaking fashion, resetting her own program record in the high jump by clearing 1.64m to secure a first-place finish.
  • Ana Hodneland, Annabelle Sutliff, Amanda Romano, and Jesma Evans broke a ten-year-old record en route to a first-place finish in the 4x400m relay, posting a time of 3:59.04. The squad surpassed the 2015 team's time of 4:00.45, becoming the first relay team in program history to run under four minutes.
  • Sophia Breschi delivered a top finish in the 5,000m run, clocking the third-fastest time in program history at 17:28.24. Her time surpassed Elise Molinaro's mark of 17:29.01.
  • Lilly Versen moved up to No. 8 all-time in the long jump after registering a mark of 5.18m, surpassing Amy Calice and Sydney Heifner in the program's top-ten list.
  • Katie Wood moved to No. 6 all-time in the program's hammer throw record books after recording a toss of 37.76m to finish in 14th place. Her mark moves her past Emma Marvelli's mark of 123'-01.00" which was set in 2024.
  • Emma Mitchell moved to No. 8 in the program's all-time 1,500m record books after clocking in a time of 4:43.56. Her mark surpasses Becca Taylor's time of 4:46.59 which was set in 2008.
  • Emily Jackson moved to ninth all-time in the program's discus record books after recording a toss of 32.65 (107'-01.00"). Her mark moves her past Emily Barker's mark of 105'-00.00" which was set in 2004.

UP NEXT
  • The second day of the W&L Carnival will kick off tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. with the Javelin while the 4x100m relay will start the track events at 12:30 p.m.
