WINCHESTER, Va. - The Washington and Lee University baseball team saw their lead quickly slip away as they dropped a midweek Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) game at Shenandoah University, 19-6, on Tuesday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Generals (5-5, 1-4 ODAC) struck first, plating three runs on three hits in the first inning. Jonathan French led off the inning with a walk before Campbell Charneco's single to right-center put runners on the corners. Andrew Thornton drove in French in the next at-bat with a double down the left-field line before Charneco came around to score on a John Turner ground out. After Frankie Maloof walked, Paul Ramseur roped a single up the middle to give the Blue and White a 3-0 lead.
- W&L extended their lead in the top of the second inning after French was hit by a pitch and Nick Lagges and Charneco drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. French came around to score on a Thornton ground out, putting the Generals up by four.
- The Hornets (10-5, 2-1 ODAC) tied the game at four in the bottom of the fourth inning on three hits and a W&L error. With the bases loaded, Christian Carver hit a two-run single to center field before a pair of runners scored on a dropped fly ball.
- The Blue and White regained the lead in the next frame as Thornton led off with a solo shot to left-center field, the second home run of his career. Turner reached base on an infield single before stealing second before coming around to score on a throwing error by the Hornets' shortstop, putting W&L up 6-4.
- Shenandoah broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth, as Carl Keenan blasted a two-run home run to kick off the inning before Noah Cornwell cleared the bases with a three-run triple to right-center field. Brody Pickette plated the final two runs of the inning with a two-run single up the middle, putting the Hornets ahead 11-6.
- Jamie Padilla drove in two more runs in the bottom of the seventh with a double to center field before Haden Madagan walked with the bases loaded to put Shenandoah up 14-6. Another Hornets' run scored on a wild pitch before Keenan sealed the seven-inning win with a grand slam to right-center.
