Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Fast start propels No. 17 W&L to 23-point win at EMU

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The No. 17 Washington and Lee women's basketball team raced out to a 15-point first quarter lead and never looked back, as the Generals picked up win No. 21 of the season, 79-56, at Eastern Mennonite on Tuesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Generals (21-3, 13-2 ODAC) scored the first six points of the game and jumped out to an 18-3 lead through six and a half minutes of play. They made 9-of-14 shots from the field while holding the Royals (11-13, 3-12 ODAC) to just 1-of-10, with a high of 10 points coming from junior Mary Schleusner.

Throughout the first quarter, the Generals never allowed consecutive field goals to EMU, as they led by a score of 27-12 through the opening 10 minutes. In the second quarter, junior Quinn McGuinness scored a W&L-high six points to help the team increase its lead to 43-24 by the half. Despite the Generals' efficiency taking a dip compared to the first quarter, the Blue and White sank all nine free throw attempts in the second quarter and held the Royals to 27.8 percent (5-18) field goal shooting.

The Royals threatened the W&L lead in the third when they started the quarter on a 12-2 run that last until 6:18 remained, getting the game back to 45-36. W&L recovered, however, to outscore the hosts, 15-12, for the remainder of the period while making 5-of-7 shots from the field. The Generals then pulled away for good in the fourth, scoring 19 of the quarter's 27 points to post the 23-point victory.

TOP PERFORMERS:
Three Generals scored in double figures, led by a 22-point, 20-rebound game from Schleusner, who made 11-of-22 shots and added four blocks on the defensive end. McGuinness followed with 15 points on 4-of-10 shooting, while junior Sarah Zimmerman scored 12 on 2-of-3 from the field and a perfect 8-for-8 at the foul line.

Lauren Townsend and Laila Glymph both scored 11 points to pace the EMU offense, with Glymph pulling down a team-high six rebounds. Jeriyah Osborne totaled nine points and five rebounds, and Grace Burke scored eight points on 3-for-5 shooting.

NOTEWORTHY POINTS:
The Generals' 21st win of the season breaks a tie with the 2021-22 team for the third-most wins in a season in program history. One more win for the Blue and White would tie the 2022-23 squad for the second most.

Schleusner's 22-point performance pushed her past Megan Babst '02 (493 – 2001-02) and Jessica Mentz '02 (496 – 2000-01) for the third-most points scored in a season. With 506 points, this marks just the third time in program history a player has scored at least 500 points in a season. Mentz was the first to do it in 2001-02 (519), while Schleusner holds the single-season record at 765 (2023-24).

With four more blocks on Tuesday, Schleusner needs just three more to break Jessica Hunsinger's '07 program record for total blocks in a career (267).

TEAM STATS:
The Generals shot 43.3 percent (29-67) from the field, including 49.1 percent (26-53) outside of the second quarter. W&L also went 18-of-19 (.947) at the free throw line, the fifth-best single-game percentage in program history.

The Royals were held to 30.9 percent (21-68) field goal shooting, including 24.0 percent (12-50) outside of the third quarter. They made 43.8 percent (7-16) of their three-point attempts and went 7-of-9 at the foul line.

W&L held additional scoring advantages in points off turnovers (23-10), second-chance points (19-11), bench points (30-16), points in the paint (40-18) and fastbreak points (15-0).
