MEADVILLE, Pa. - The sixth-ranked Washington and Lee University women's basketball team took the lead late in the first quarter and never gave it back, cruising to a 77-65 win over Chatham University at the Women Leaders Tip Off Tournament.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Cougars (1-1) built up a three-point lead in the first quarter with a jumper from Jordyn Jensen before the Generals (2-0) went on a 9-2 run to take a six point lead. Two-straight layups from Hannah Chenault and Madison Nereu to end the quarter, cutting the Generals lead to 17-15.
- The Blue and White expanded their lead in the second thanks to a pair of three-pointers from Zou Raine and Quinn McGuinness, before Kate Kennedy added a layup to put the Generals up 37-26 heading into the break.
- After halftime, Riley Bryant and Mary Schleusner added layups before McGuinness knocked down a pair of free throws to put the Generals up 43-26, their largest lead of the day. Schleusner added five points at the end of the third with a pair of layups and a free throw to put W&L up by 17 heading into the final ten minutes of play. Both teams traded baskets to start the fourth quarter until the Cougars cut the Generals' lead to six after back-to-back layups from Maria Barela and Nereu. Free throws from Bri Shuttlewood and Elka Prechel as well as a Schleusner tip-in layup produced a 6-2 final run to secure their second win of the season.
TOP PERFORMERS
- Madison Nereu of Chatham led all scorers with 37 points, shooting 17-of-31 from the field this afternoon. Schleusner led the Generals with 24 points and 17 rebounds, shooting 10-of-14. She dished out seven assists while blocking six shots. Caroline Shimp added a career-high 13 points, knocking down five of her seven shots.
- Icy Keneah was 6-for-6 at the free throw line this afternoon, tallying eight points in total. Nereu, Hannah Chenault and Maria Barela of Chatham knocked down all of their free throws as well.
TEAM STATS
- The Blue and White shot 46 percent from the field this afternoon, knocking down 27 of their 59 attempts. They posted a game-high 57 percent shooting performance in the third quarter, going 8-of-14 from the field.
- W&L grabbed a game-high 45 rebounds, including 14 offensive and 31 defensive boards, while registering 11 blocks and six steals in the win. The Generals scored 40 points in the paint and added 17 points off the Cougars' turnovers. They also received 31 points from their bench.
- Chatham finished 28-of-71 (39%) from the field and went a perfect 7-for-7 at the free throw line. The Cougars pulled down 31 rebounds — 12 offensive and 19 defensive — while recording three blocks and eight steals. They scored 22 points off W&L's turnovers and tallied 42 points in the paint.
NOTEWORTHY POINTS
- Schleusner moved into the top ten for career assists on Sunday, ranking 8th all-time with 224 assists. She moved past Allie Long, Bethany Ridenhour and Ansley Miller on the top ten list.
