Game Recap: Field Hockey |

No. 21 Generals Fall 4–3 in Overtime at No. 20 Shenandoah in ODAC Semifinals

WINCHESTER, Va. —The No. 21 Washington and Lee University field hockey team went toe-to-toe with 20th-ranked Shenandoah University on Thursday night, falling 4–3 in overtime in the ODAC Semifinals at Aikens Stadium.

The Generals (14–5) built a 3–1 lead midway through the third quarter before the Hornets (16–3) stormed back to tie the game in the final minute of regulation and net the game-winner less than three minutes into overtime.

W&L struck first at 8:52 in the opening period when Betty Boatwright tipped in a feed from Margaret Scheurer for her 9th goal of the season. Boatwright added her second of the night at 33:09 off a pass from Margaret Cover to make it 2–0 early in the third quarter. After the Hornets got on the board at 39:00, Boatwright completed the hat trick with an unassisted goal at 42:39 to restore the two-goal cushion.

Shenandoah rallied with two third-quarter goals — one from Mallory Holup and another from Madison Short on a penalty stroke — to close the gap to 3–2. The Hornets forced overtime with Ellie Quinn's equalizer at 59:48 and completed the comeback when Reagan Flory scored off a Claudia Lenahan assist at 62:46 for the walk-off win.

The Generals outshot the Hornets 9–8 and earned nine penalty corners to Shenandoah's 12. Goalkeeper Julia McDonald made three saves for W&L, while Cassidy Alexander recorded three for Shenandoah.

Up Next: Washington and Lee will await the results of conference championship weekend and the announcement of the NCAA Division III postseason bracket on Sunday, hoping for an at-large bid to the national tournament.
