No. 24 Volleyball Downs Hollins in Straight Sets

LEXINGTON, Va. - The 24th-ranked Washington and Lee University women's volleyball team secured their seventh Old Dominon Athletic Conference (ODAC) sweep of the season as they downed Hollins University in straight sets on Tuesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED (W&L 3-0, 25-16, 25-17, 25-13)
  • Both teams traded points to start the first set until Hollins (8-13, 0-8 ODAC) went on a 4-1 run to take a 7-4 lead. The Generals (19-5, 7-3 ODAC) responded with a 4-1 run of their own to tie the first frame at eight, thanks to a pair of kills from Ava Gaines alongside a kill and service ace from Grace Mitchener. The Blue and White took an eight-point lead after a 10-1 run, which featured three kills from Mitchener and two from Riley Debiec. W&L claimed the first set 25-16 with a 5-2 run that saw kills from Debiec, Cara Hamil, and Mitchener.
  • After the Generals took a 3-1 lead thanks to a kill from Debiec and a kill and service ace from Emily Schellenberg, Hollins took a 6-4 lead following a 5-1 run of their own. Both teams traded points until three straight points from Hollins gave them a 12-10 lead. The Blue and White knotted the match at 13 after a 3-1 run that saw a kill from Hamil and a Schellenberg service ace. The Generals finished off the second set with a 10-1 run, claiming the set 25-17. The run was highlighted by three kills from Ryan Taylor, one from Mitchener, a Sienna Nichoson service ace, as well as blocks from Mitchener and Taylor, and a solo block by Taylor.
  • Back-and-forth action highlighted the start of the third set until a Mitchener kill kickstarted a 4-1 run, which also saw a pair of kills from Hamil. An ensuing 5-1 run gave the Blue and White a 16-10 lead thanks to kills from Debiec and Hamil alongside a pair of attacking errors from Hollins. The Generals claimed the third set 25-13, capping off the final frame with a 7-1 run. The final scoring stretch featured kills from Mitchener, Taylor, Hamil, and Gaines, as well as a Nichoson service ace and a block from Taylor and Gaines.
TOP PERFORMERS
  • Mitchener led all players with 15 kills on 32 swings with four errors for a .344 hitting percentage, adding 15 digs for her 12th double-double of the season. Debiec and Hamil each added nine in the win, with Debiec posting a .381 hitting percentage. Sophia Maurer, Alyssa Reed, and Ivy Collins each had six kills for Hollins.
  • Nichoson dished out a match-high 17 assists in the win, while Addi Johnson added 16. Brenna Anduiza led Hollins with 14 assists, and Rachel Hull added eight.
  • Konner Myers of Hollins led the match with 17 digs, while Mitchener (15), Schellenberg (14), and Hamil (12) each reached double figures.
  • Taylor led the match with two blocks (one solo), while Mitchener and Gaines added one block assist. Norah Madrey led Hollins with two block assists, while four other members of the team each had one block assist.
  • Anduiza of Hollins led the match with three service aces, while Schellenberg and Nichoson each recorded two. Mitchener and Debiec each recorded one service ace as well.
W&L GAME NOTES
  • The Blue and White moved to 19-5 on the season with a 7-3 mark in conference play. The win also marked their 30th-straight win over Hollins, with their last loss coming during the 1992 season.
  • W&L recorded 44 kills on 113 attempts with ten errors for a .301 hitting percentage, registering a match-high .321 hitting percentage in the second set. They led five of the six team categories, including digs (68), assists (41), service aces (6), kills (44), and points (53).
  • With her 15 digs this evening, junior Grace Mitchener is eight digs away from becoming the 19th player in program history to surpass 1,000 career digs.
