No. 24 Volleyball Sweeps Shenandoah on Senior Day

LEXINGTON, Va. - The 24th-ranked Washington and Lee University women's volleyball team honored their six senior members this afternoon, downing Shenandoah University in straight sets in Holekamp Gym.

Following the match, the team honored Caroline Natwick, Penelope Quiles, Emery Goerig, Ryan Taylor, Diane Pierre-Louis and Riley Debiec for their contributions over the last four years. As a group, they have led the Blue and White to a 96-30 overall record with a 38-9 mark in conference play and a 40-8 record inside Holekamp Gym. In addition, the seniors have helped the team win two Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) championships, make two trips to the NCAA Tournament appearances and hoist their first Regional Championship in program history last season.

HOW IT HAPPENED (W&L 3-0, 25-13, 25-13, 25-15)
  • Both teams traded points to open the first set until the Generals (20-5, 8-3 ODAC) went on a 5-1 run to take a 7-3 lead. Riley Debiec highlighted the run with a pair of kills and a service ace, while Ryan Taylor and Grace Mitchener each added one kill. An ensuing 7-1 run gave W&L a commanding 15-6 lead thanks to two kills from Cara Hamil, one from Taylor, as well as a block from the duo. Three-straight kills from Hamil, Mitchener, and Debiec gave the Blue and White an 11-point lead before four unanswered points secured the first set, 25-13. The final run featured a block from Hamil and Emery Goerig, as well as three attacking errors from the Hornets (10-9, 6-4 ODAC).
  • The Blue and White opened up the second set with a 5-1 run, which featured two kills from Debiec and one from Addi Johnson. Both teams traded points throughout the middle of the set until the Generals went on a 6-1 run to take an 18-9 lead. The scoring stretch featured kills from Debiec, Hamil, Taylor, and Diane Pierre-Louis, as well as a Debiec service ace. W&L finished off the second set with a 7-3 run, claiming the second frame 25-13. The last run featured kills from Mitchener and Ava Gaines, as well as a Sienna Nichoson service ace and a block from Debiec and Gaines.
  • The Hornets opened up the third set with a 3-1 run before back-to-back attacking errors knotted the set at three. Shenandoah found themselves with a 7-4 lead following a pair of kills and a service ace, but a service error and a block from Mitchener and Taylor shut down their run. W&L responded with a dominant 12-1 run to reclaim the lead 19-10. The run featured two kills from Hamil and one from Debiec, alongside an Emily Schellenberg and Penelope Quiles service ace and a block from Pierre-Louis and Hamil. The Blue and White capped off the sweep with three unanswered points, which saw kills from Schellenberg and Mitchener.
TOP PERFORMERS
  • Hannah Hylton of Shenandoah led the match with 13 kills on 38 swings with eight errors for a .132 hitting percentage. Debiec led the Blue and White with ten kills on 23 attempts with one error and a .391 hitting percentage.
  • Amanda Ingrassia led the match with 15 assists while Susan Smith dished out ten. Addi Johnson led W&L with 14 assists while adding a block and a kill.
  • Autumn Stroop of Shenandoah led the match with 21 digs, while Hamil (16 digs) and Mitchener (15 digs) each surpassed double digits.
  • Ryan Taylor led the match with five block assists and one solo, while Hamil added four block assists. Kamryn Keasey led the Hornets with two block assists. Debiec posted a match-high two service aces, while Hamil, Quiles, Schellenberg, and Nichoson each had one. Hannah Hylton and Samantha Shy each had one for the Hornets.
W&L GAME NOTES
  • The Generals moved to 20-5 on the season while capping off the conference slate with an 8-3 mark. The win also marked the 24th-straight win over the Hornets, dating back to their first win in 1991.
  • W&L registered 34 kills on 96 swings with two errors for a .333 hitting percentage, including a match-high .375 clip in the first set. They led four of the six team categories with 50 points, six service aces, ten blocks, and 56 digs.
  • Junior Grace Mitchener became the 19th player in program history to surpass 1,000 digs this afternoon. She currently ranks 18th all-time with 1,007 digs. Senior Riley Debiec broke into the top ten for sets played in a career, playing in 426 sets, which ranks tenth all-time.
