LEXINGTON, Va. – A late goal from junior
Matthew Jenkins secured a 1-1 draw on Wednesday evening for the Washington and Lee men's soccer team, the 15th straight game in the head-to-head series against No. 23 Hampden-Sydney without a loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Tigers (7-1-1, 2-0-1 ODAC) moved out in front in the 44th minute when a Tyler Petz cross from the left side found the foot of Mason Dudley inside the six. Through traffic, Dudley scored his third goal of the season.
- While still trailing five minutes into the second half, the Generals (3-2-4, 1-0-1 ODAC) gained an advantage when Petz was sent off on a red card following a hard tackle.
- The Generals capitalized on playing up a player in the 79th minute on a score from junior Matthew Jenkins. In another scrum in front of the goal, Jenkins had an initial shot blocked, but he stayed with the play, gathered his own rebound and equalized.
- Both defenses performed strongly throughout the night, but the Tigers had the upper hand in the first half by not allowing a single shot. The W&L offense then found a rhythm in the second half with eight shots and five on goal.
TOP PERFORMERS:
- Senior Buster Couhig led the Generals with four shots and three attempts on goal for the night. Sophomore Ricardo Sanchez had one shot in the game, which nearly tied the score in the 51st minute, but it hit off the crossbar.
- Jenkins got on the board with his first goal of the season on what was his only shot of the game.
- Dudley's goal was also his only attempt at goal. Charlie Letson was the only Tiger with multiple shots (2), and he put one shot on goal.
- Will Joseph and Stig Larson both played all 90 minutes in their respective goals. Larson made four saves while Joseph made two.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- With Wednesday's draw, the Generals extended their unbeaten streak against H-SC to 15 games, going 13-0-2 in that time. The tie, however, ended an eight-game winning streak for W&L against the Tigers.
- The Generals are also unbeaten in their last 19 regular season ODAC games (13-0-6) and have not lost in their last 16 games against conference opposition (11-0-5, includes postseason)
TEAM STATS:
- After outshooting the Tigers 8-3 in the second half, the Generals closed their final shot deficit to 9-8. W&L put five shots on goal to three for the Tigers.
- Hampden-Sydney took four of the five corner kicks in the first half, but W&L took all five in the second half for a final 6-4 edge.
