LEXINGTON, Va. – A 22-0 run in the second quarter propelled the 14th-ranked Washington and Lee women's basketball team to a 69-53 win over Guilford on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The first quarter featured competitive back-and-forth between both sides, with W&L (16-2, 8-1 ODAC) leading by as many as five points twice, including a 15-10 lead by the end of the frame. In the second quarter, Guilford (11-7, 5-5 ODAC) scored five points in the first minute, but was then held scoreless for the remainder of the first half. In that time, the Generals scored 22 points themselves to build up a 40-15 advantage by the halfway point.
During their 22-0 run, the Generals made 8-of-14 shots, including 3-of-7 from long range, while holding the Quakers to 0-of-17 shooting. Junior
Sarah Zimmerman paced the W&L offense with eight points in the second quarter, plus five from junior
Mary Schleusner.
The Quakers flipped the script in the third quarter by outscoring W&L, 21-8, which included a 16-4 run over the first 8:40. With Guilford having brought it back to a 44-31 Generals lead, junior
Icy Keneah sank a jumper at the 1:15 to help key a 10-5 run into the fourth quarter. An 11-4 spurt from the visitors got the W&L lead down to 58-47, before Sarah and
Megan Zimmerman accounted for all of W&L's final 11 points over the final 3:10 to ensure victory.
TOP PERFORMERS:
For the second time this season,
Sarah Zimmerman reset her career-high scoring output with her first 20-point game. She made 8-of-14 shots from the field, including 2-of-4 from deep and two free throws to finish right on 20, and she added seven rebounds, two blocks and three steals. Schleusner followed with a 13-point, 13-rebound double-double to go along with five assists, six blocks and three steals.
Junior
Quinn McGuinness rounded out the defensive leaders with three steals, as well, while scoring seven points, pulling in seven rebounds and dishing out six assists.
Megan Zimmerman finished the day at seven points, with six more points coming from junior
Elka Prechel.
Anna Giannopoulou paced the Guilford offense with 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting, plus four rebounds and three steals. Zoe Bayer and Markayla Massenburg tied Giannopoulou's team high of three steals, with Bayer scoring nine points. Courtney McMillan also had nine points, and Julianna Walter led Guilford with eight rebounds.
NOTEWORTHY POINTS:
Saturday's win marked the ninth straight overall victory for the Blue and White, as they have found their stride in 2025. Nine straight wins is tied for the fourth-longest winning streak in program history, and it was also the team's 11th straight home win, the second-longest run in program history.
With two made three-point shots, Prechel tied Emily Perszyk '18 (195) for the fourth-most made triples in program history. Taylor Casey '20 is next on the list with 231.
TEAM STATS:
The Generals shot 37.0 percent (27-73) from the field, including 56.3 percent (9-16) in the second quarter. They held Guilford down to 28.1 percent (18-64) shooting, with a low of 5.0 percent (1-20) in the second quarter.
W&L's lockdown defense extended past Guilford's low field goal percentage, as it was the Generals' first game of the season with double-digit blocks (10) and steals (12). It was the first time they accomplished that in a game since December 30 of last season.
Additionally, W&L outscored Guilford off turnovers (19-12), on second chances (15-5), in the paint (36-20), on the fastbreak (17-11) and off the bench (19-14).
