SEWANEE, Tenn. – A second-half brace from senior
Weyimi Agbeyegbe propelled the third-ranked Washington and Lee men's soccer team to a 2-1 win at Sewanee on Friday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
After a scoreless first half, Agbeyegbe put the Generals (1-2) on the board in the 48th minute on a penalty kick following a foul on sophomore
Matthew Jenkins in the box. Agbeyegbe calmly deposited his shot into the bottom-right corner of the frame for the lead.
Just under 15 minutes later, W&L put together a string of passes which resulted in Agbeyegbe's second score of the night. Sophomore
Dmitri Tulloch controlled possession in the offensive third and passed off to Jenkins running up field, who then left it for Agbeyegbe cutting into the box on the right side. Agbeyegbe continued his run goalward and beat the keeper to the low-right corner again from close range.
The Tigers (0-3) managed an answer six and a half minutes later on a long-range effort from Isaac Rasheed. With the ball rolling back towards the W&L goal, keeper
Will Joseph came out on the right side to clear the ball from danger. His clear was subsequently deflected and went right to Rasheed, who launched from well outside the box. Joseph raced back and leaped in a full-extension effort to punch it away, but Rasheed's shot was well-placed for the goal.
Both offenses continued to pepper the opposing goalkeeper with shots over the final 21:34, with a count of 5-3 in favor of the Blue and White in that time. Two of the Generals' shots were saved by Nathan Vanhoeve, while Joseph also came up with two stops, both in the final three minutes. One final chance came off the boot of Stokes McConnell with 10 seconds left, but his attempt sailed well high of the net to close things out.
TOP PERFORMERS:
Agbeyegbe's two scores marked his sixth career multi-goal game, and they were also his first two of the season. Agbeyegbe got six shots off on the night and put three on goal. Senior
Lucas Pleasants tallied four shots and one on goal, while sophomore
Taha Kaba and senior
Will Luik both put 1-of-3 attempts on target. Joseph played all 90 minutes in goal and made five saves to earn the win.
Sewanee relied heavily on the starting lineup for production on Friday night, going to only four reserve players, with nine of the 11 starters logging over 70 minutes. Rasheed was the standout for the hosts with a goal on three shots. Vanhoeve was in goal for all 90 minutes, as well, and matched Joseph's five saves.
NOTEWORTHY POINTS:
With two goals in the game, Agbeyegbe moved past Dylan Ritch '19 (35) and into a three-way tie with Zach Colby '15 and Tim Henry '66 (36) for fourth place on the program's all-time goals list. Agbeyegbe also became just the fourth player in program history to reach 90 career points, joining Ritch (94), Jamie Parker '00 (110) and Sam Chase '99 (117).
TEAM STATS:
W&L ended the night with a 20-13 advantage in total shot attempts, including a 13-8 positive margin after halftime. The Blue and White also took three of their four corner kicks in the second half, and they conceded three all game.
