FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – First-year
Allie Murrell kept her strong, early-season play going on Sunday by advancing to the ITA Southeast Regional Tournament singles and doubles semifinals, including an upset of the top doubles seed in the Round of 16.
HIGHLIGHTS FROM DAY 2:
Murrell, along with classmate and doubles partner
Mary Kate Kahl, opened the day by advancing automatically to the doubles quarterfinals after their Round of 16 opponents withdrew prior to the match. In the quarters, Kahl and Murrell faced top-seeded Sophia Kim and Sydney Langer of Johns Hopkins, where they earned an 8-5 win to make it to Monday's semifinal round. The first-year pairing was down, 3-2, before they rattled off wins in six of the next eight games.
In singles play, Murrell held a 5-2 lead in the first set against Carnegie Mellon's Divya Venkatarama, but fell behind after the Tartan came back for a 7-6 (2) set-one win. Murrell bounced back immediately, however, with a 6-0 win in the second set and clinched the match, 10-5, in the third-set breaker.
Murrell was next slated to face off against JHU's Kamila Wong in the quarterfinals, but Wong pulled out of the tournament to push Murrell ahead in the draw.
Juniors
Lauren Long and
Grace Lorenz also posted a Round of 16 win in the main doubles draw, besting the Marymount duo of Hana Kimmey and Nikhita Simhambhalta, 8-1, before falling in the quarterfinals to JHU's Wong and Ava Li. Long picked up a championship draw singles win on the day in the Round of 16, battling against CMU's Joycie Lu for a 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7) win.
Sophomore
Haley Stoltz remained in the winners bracket of the Blue 1 singles draw and earned a 7-5 first-set win over Zoe Hsieh of Johns Hopkins, before Hsieh retired. Stoltz then fell in the Blue 1 championship match in straight sets to JHU's Sahana Sanjeev.
Junior
Riho Iijima rounded out the high points for the W&L women's tennis team on Sunday with a 3-0 record in the backdraw of the championship singles bracket. Playing in eight-game, pro sets, Iijima lost only 10 games total across the three matches, including an 8-2 victory over Lisa Messier of Swarthmore in the consolation quarterfinals.
UP NEXT:
Murrell and Kahl will meet Carnegie Mellon's Anna Chow and Shelly Zinchenko in the semifinals on Monday at 9:00 a.m., before Murrell will face-off against Sophia Kim of Johns Hopkins in the singles semifinals at a time to be determined. Should W&L's doubles and/or singles participants advance, the championship matches would also take place on Monday.
