ASHLAND, Va. - The Washington and Lee University baseball team saw its' 2024 campaign come to a close on Saturday evening as they dropped the second game of a best-of-three series to top-seeded and 20th-ranked Randolph-Macon College, 12-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Yellow Jackets (28-11) wasted no time as they plated six runs in the bottom half of the first frame on five hits. RMC would extend their lead in the 2nd inning as Chaz Harvey scored on a sacrifice fly, giving them a 7-0 lead.
- The Yellow Jackets extended their lead to nine in the 4th inning as back-to-back doubles from Harvey and Zach Wernoski brought home the eighth run before Wernoski scored on a Logan Duff sacrifice fly to put RMC up 9-0.
- Randolph-Macon's bats stayed hot in the 5th inning as Jon Quici singled to start the inning before coming around to score on a Carter Schmitt double to left center field. Schmitt would come around to score two batters later as Harvey drove him in with a sacrifice fly to put the Yellow Jackets up 11-0.
- The Generals (16-19) plated their first run of the game in the 7th inning as John Turner doubled to start the inning before Mason Satterfield and Paul Ramseur drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Turner would come around to score on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to ten.
- The Yellow Jackets would score the final run of the game in the bottom of the 8th inning as Richie Dudley was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, bringing in Wernoski from third base.
W&L GAME NOTES
- The Generals finished their season with a 16-19 record, making the ODAC Tournament for the fourth straight season.
- Mason Satterfield (2-for-3) and Jacob Jackson (2-for-5) led the Blue and White with two hits. Drew Larsen and John Turner combined for the other two hits for the Generals.
- John Benner (3-4) was credited with the loss after allowing six earned runs on five hits in 0.2 innings.
RMC GAME NOTES
- With the series win, the Yellow Jackets move on to the ODAC double Elimination Tournament in Tysons, Va.
- Wernoski led the team with a 4-for-5 (.800) effort at the plate this afternoon with a double and one RBI. Harvey and Hill each had two hits for the Yellow Jackets.
- Drew Ramos (8-1) earned his eighth win of the season after tossing five shutout innings while punching out seven batters.
