Baseball Splits ODAC Doubleheader with Guilford

LEXINGTON, Va. - The Washington and Lee University baseball team split an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader with Guilford on Saturday after defeating the Quakers 9-3 in game one before falling 8-4 in game two.

GAME ONE | W&L 9, GC 3
  • The Generals (13-13, 7-9 ODAC) and Quakers (12-17, 5-8 ODAC) split their sixth straight doubleheader against each other on Saturday afternoon. 
  • The Blue and White plated the first run of the game in the bottom of the 2nd inning after Drew Larsen and Ethan Zulueta both singled to start the inning. John Turner would bring home Larsen on a sacrifice fly to right field, putting W&L up 1-0. 
  • In the 3rd, Zach Sencers kicked off the inning with a single through the left side of the infield before Paul Ramseur pulled a single into right field. After Jacob Jackson bunted both of them into scoring position, Senders would come around to score on a Campbell Charneco ground out to put the Generals up 2-0. 
  • The Quakers' offense found their footing in the top half of the 4th inning as Aaron Williams would come around to score on a Ethan George sacrifice fly to cut the lead to one. Guilford would take a 3-2 lead after Tanner Royals roped a double into the left center field gap, bringing home two runners.
  • The Generals would tie the game at three in the bottom half of the inning as Senders drove in Jonathan French with an RBI single through the left side of the infield.
  • Zulueta drew a walk to start the bottom of the 6th inning before Turner singled to put two runners on. The Generals would have the bases loaded after Mike Carpenter reached on a throwing error before Zulueta came around to score on a Mason Satterfield sacrifice fly. 
  • With runners on second and third, Senders roped a double into the right center field gap to bring home Carpenter and Turner to put the Generals up 6-3.
  • The Blue and White would plate the final three runs of the game in the bottom of the 8th inning as Ramseur drove in Turner on a single to left field before Jackson poked a ball through the left side, bringing home Satterfield and putting the Generals up 8-3. Ramseur would come around to score the next at-bat as Charneco drove him in on a single to left field. 


GAME TWO | GC 8, W&L 4
  • The Quakers struck first in game two as George kicked off the 2nd inning with a single to right field before Grayson Tuder put runners on the corner with a single to left center field. Both would come around to score after Carter Blum doubled to left center to give Guilford a two run lead.
  • Guilford would tack onto their lead in the 3rd inning as Micahel Sumner doubled to start the inning before stealing third the next at-bat. Sumner would extend their lead to three as he scored on a George infield single. 
  • The game hit a standstill until the seventh inning when the Quakers plated two runs on three hits. After Sumner reached on an error, Isaiah Hairston tripled to center field to bring home their fourth run of the game. Hairston would come around to score on a Williams sacrifice fly to center field, putting the visitors up 5-0. 
  • The Generals weren't going down without a fight as Zulueta and Turner both singled to start the inning before Zulueta came around to score on a Jaden Keuhner single down the right field line.
  • With two runners on, Senders brought home Turner on a single to right field before Ramseur drove in French and Satterfield with a single up the middle, cutting the Quakers lead to one.
  • In the top of the 9th, the Quakers record back-to-back singles before loading the bases on an intentional walk. Jordan Burrough put Guilford up 7-4 as he doubled to right field, bringing home Williams and George. Nick Boles would plate the final run of the afternoon, scoring on a Blum sacrifice fly.

W&L GAME NOTES
  • The Generals fall to 13-13 on the season and 7-9 in conference play. 
  • Jacob Jackson and Zach Senders both led the team with a 4-for-8 (.500) at the plate today. Senders drove in a team high four runs with a double. Ethan Zulueta was 3-for-7 (.429) on the day, extending his hitting streak to 19 straight games. 
  • Evan Blair (3-1) earned his third win of the season after allowing three runs on seven hits with three strikeouts in his six innings of work. Ben Sundell picked up his second save of the season, tossing three shutout innings with one strikeout. 
  • Cooper Charneco (1-2) was credited with the loss in game two as he allowed three runs on six hits with two strikeouts in three innings.
GUILFORD GAME NOTES
  • Guilford moves to 12-17 overall and 5-8 in ODAC play after the split on Saturday.
  • Ethan George led the Quakers' offense in game two, going 4-for-5 (.800) with one RBI. Dark and Wade were 2-for-4 (.500) in the game one loss while Tanner Royals drove in a team high two runs. 
  • Marcello Riciglian (2-4) was credited with the loss in game one after allowing six runs on nine hits in 5.1 innings of work. 
  • Jacob Ray (1-3) earned his first win of the season after tossing six shutout innings, only allowing four hits while striking out two batters.

  • The Blue and White are back in action on Tuesday, Apr. 9 as they host Eastern Mennonite University at 4 p.m. at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.
