O'Brien Named ODAC Equestrian Scholar Athlete of the Year, Generals Take Third at Championships

ROANOKE, Va. - Members of the Washington and Lee University equestrian team competed at Hollins University today for the 2024 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Equestrian Championships at Kirby Arena in the Hollins Riding Center on Saturday. 

The Generals rode to a third place team finish after taking second in the first class, fourth in the second class and fourth in the final class, on the flat. Elisabeth Marek, Jade Condrell, Allison Hines and Clare O'Brien represented W&L in both jumping classes and Marek and O'Brien rode in the flat event, too. 

After leading the team in the first and second class scoring, senior Clare O'Brien finished third in All-ODAC point calculations and was voted the Virginia Farm Bureau Scholar Athlete of the Year by the league's sports information personnel.

The senior excels in the classroom as an American history major and is minoring in law, justice and society studies. The team co-captain is a three-time President's List honoree, seven-time W&L Scholar-Athlete award-winner and a three time Academic All-ODAC selection. 

The 2022-23 VaSID Academic All-State selection was honored with the 2024 Sportsmanship and Horsemanship award, in addition to the Most Outstanding Senior honoree for Region 2. This season the Dallastown, Pa. native has earned ribbons in all nine IHSA meets with three first-place ribbons over fences and five first-place ribbons on the flat. On two occasions, she earned High Point Rider, at the Hollins IHSA event in October and the IHSA tri in November.

The 2023 Nationals qualifier was the runner-up in the Region 2 Cacchione Cup standings and helped W&L to three team wins and three third-place finishes during the regular season.

CLASS 1 

  • The Blue and White collected a total of 240.5 team points and finished second overall behind the University of Lynchburg's 253.5 points. 
  • W&L was awarded five team points for the runner-up finish. 
  • Top 3: Lynchburg 253.0, W&L 240.5, Hollins 238.5

CLASS 2

  • The Generals finished with 215.25 points during the Class 2 judging, good for a fourth-place finish and three points. 
  • Top 3: Lynchburg 247.5, Hollins 235.5, and Sweet Briar 222.0.

CLASS 3

  • Marek earned scores of 84 and 86 for an 85 average and O'Brien scored an 80 and 76 for the 78 average. 
  • The pair combined for a total of 163.0 points and finished fourth in team scoring. 
  • The Blue and White totaled three points from the flat class.  
  • Top 3: Lynchburg 175.5, Hollins 169.0, and Bridgewater 164.0.
