Baseball Splits Conference Doubleheader at Roanoke

SALEM, Va. - The Washington and Lee University baseball team split a Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader on Saturday as they downed Roanoke College 14-6 in game one before falling 5-4 in 14 innings in game two.  

GAME ONE | W&L 14 , RC 6
  • The Generals (11-12, 5-8 ODAC) wasted no time in the top half of the 1st inning as Paul Ramseur led off the game with a single to center field. Campbell Charneco would drive in the game's first run as he roped a double to left center field.
  • Drew Larsen would be hit by a pitch the next at-bat before Ethan Zulueta drew a walk to load the bases. John Turner drove in W&L's second run as he drew another walk. The Generals would take a 3-0 lead as Jaden Keuhner reached on a fielding error by the Maroons' (13-12, 8-2 ODAC) second baseman. 
  • The Blue and White would double their lead in the 2nd inning as Zulueta blasted a two-RBI double down the left field line, driving in Larsen and Jacob Jackson before coming around to score on a Turner single to center field. 
  • Ramseur recorded his second hit of the afternoon on a single to left field, putting him and Mason Satterfield on first and second. Jackson would drive in Satterfield the next at-bat as he singled to center to put the Generals up 7-0. Ramseur would come around to score on a Charneco sacrifice fly to give the Blue and White a 8-0 lead.
  • The Roanoke offense found their footing in the bottom of the 4th as H. Giordano blasted a solo home run to left center field to plate their first run of the game. After an error by the Generals, C. Freels drove in K. Moshier with a double to center field to cut the deficit to six. 
  • The Maroons would load the bases following a N. Prince single, D. Bonzon would draw a walk to drive in a run and plate their third run of the inning. 
  • Roanoke would cut the Generals' lead to three in the bottom of the fifth as T. Schiavoni and Giordano were in scoring position following a single and a double. Freels drove in Schiavoni and Giordano on a single, bringing the score to 8-5 in favor of the Generals. 
  • The Maroons inched closer in the 6th inning as J. Wall drove in Bonzon on a single to center field, cutting the lead to two.
  • Jackson extended the Generals' lead back to four as he blasted a two-run home run down the left field line to put W&L up 10-6 in the 7th inning. 
  • Satterfield led off the top of the 9th inning with a double to left field before coming around to score on a Ramseur sacrifice fly. After a Charneco intentional walk, Jackson would double down the left field line before both would come around to score on a Zulueta single to put the Blue and White up by seven runs. 
  • Larsen would plate the final run of the game as he scored on a wild pitch to put the Generals up 14-6. 
  • Raleigh Craft closed out the game for the Generals, forcing two pop ups while striking out one batter. 

GAME TWO | RC 5, W&L 4 (14 inn.) 
  • The Maroons struck first in the bottom of the 2nd as Moshier doubled to center field before coming around to score on back-to-back wild pitches to put RC up 1-0. 
  • The Generals would knot the game at one in the 4th inning as Charneco kicked off the top half of the frame with a double to center field before coming around to score on a Turner infield single. 
  • Roanoke would retake the lead the next inning as Freels hit a solo home run to left field to go up 2-1. 
  • In the top of the 7th, Turner kicked off the inning with a solo shot to left field to tie the game up at two. 
  • Roanoke would extend their lead to two in the bottom half of the frame as Prince singled to left field before C. Coogan blasted a two-run homer down the left field line to put them up 4-2. 
  • W&L would get one back in the eighth as Larsen drove in Jackson on a single to center field, bringing the score to 4-3 in favor of RC.
  • Down one run in the top of the 9th, Turner kicked off the inning with a single into center field. With two outs, the Generals called Jack Belbot to the plate to pinch hit and he delivered an RBI single to send the game to extra innings. 
  • The Generals and Maroons would go scoreless until the 14th inning where Fehlner reached on a fielder's choice before Schiavoni walked it off with a double to center field to secure a 5-4 win and a series split.

W&L GAME NOTES
  • The Generals split their fourth conference double header of the season as the are 11-12 this season with a 5-8 mark in ODAC play.
  • John Turner led the offense with a 5-for-9 (.556) effort at the plate with one double and four RBI. Jacob Jackson tied the single-game record for hits as he was 5-for-6 (.833) in game one with a double, a home run and three RBI. Across both games, Jackson ranked second on the team with a .385 batting average. 
  • Ben Sundell (2-1) earned the win in game one after pitching 2.1 shutout innings in relief. Evan Blair started the game on the bump for the Generals, allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits with five strikeouts in 3.2 innings of action. 
  • Bob Burr (0-1) was credited with the loss in game two after allowing the game winning run. Cooper Charneco and Sims DeLong combined for 13 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits with nine combined strikeouts. 
ROANOKE GAME NOTES
  • The Maroons move to 13-12 on the season with an 8-2 mark in conference play.
  • Hayden Giordano led the Maroons offense in game one with a 4-for-5 effort at the plate with a double and a home run. Tucker Schiavoni was the hero in game two for the Maroons, driving in the winning run on an RBI-double. 
  • Thomas Burgess (2-2) was credited with the loss in game one as he allowed six runs (six earned) on five hits in two innings of work. Isaac Brooks (1-0) earned his first win of the season in game two, tossing four shutout innings to help Roanoke secure a split.
