Baseball Swept by No. 21 Lynchburg in Sunday Series

LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Washington and Lee University baseball team was swept by the 21st-ranked University of Lynchburg Hornets on Sunday in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader. 

GAME ONE | #21 LYN 9, W&L 8
  • Paul Ramseur drew a walk to lead off the game before Jacob Jackson roped a double to right center field, bringing home Ramseur to give the Generals (10-10, 4-6 ODAC) a 1-0 lead. 
  • The Generals had the bases loaded after Andrew Thornton and Campbell Charneco reached base on a walk and a hit by pitch. Jack Belbot brought home the second run of the game as he drew the third walk of the inning before Jonathan French reached on a fielder's choice to give the Genearls a 3-0 lead.
  • Ethan Zulueta would plate the Generals fourth and final run of the inning with an RBI single through the middle of the infield.
  • The Hornets (14-6, 5-2 ODAC) would respond in the bottom half of the inning as Eric Hiett singled to right field, driving in Brandon Garcia to cut the lead to three.
  • Lynchburg would cut the lead in half as Sean Pokorak led off the inning with a double to left field before scoring on a Garcia single. 
  • After John Turner and Ramseur reached base with one out in the top of the 4th, Drew Larsen blasted his second home run of the season to extend the Generals lead to five. 
  • The Hornets would tie the game at seven in the bottom half of the inning as they scored five runs on three hits. Lynchburg brought two runs across on two walks with the bases loaded before Quinn Madden and Gavin Collins drove in three runs on back-to-back singles.
  • The Blue and White retook the lead in the 5th as John Turner doubled, driving in French to put the Generals back on top 8-7.
  • Lynchburg would take a 9-8 lead in the bottom of the 6th as Logan Webster blasted a two-run home run to left field. C. McGuire would close out the game, tossing two shutout innings to earn his second save of the season.

GAME TWO | #21 LYN 12, W&L 11
  • The Hornets kicked off game two with a four spot in the bottom of the 1st inning. Madden roped a double to right center to clear the bases and give Lynchburg a three run lead. Madden would come around to score the next at-bat on a Collins RBI double, to give the home team a 4-0 lead.
  • Lynchburg would extend their lead to six in the 2nd inning as Garcia came around to score on a wild pitch before Madden drove in Jones on a sacrifice fly. 
  • The Generals would respond in the top of the 3rd inning as they scored four runs on six hits. Ramseur singled up the middle before Jackson roped a double to left field to put two runners in scoring position. Larsen drove in Ramesur on a single to right field before Charneco blasted a three run home run to bring the Blue and White within two. 
  • The game would be scoreless until the bottom of the 6th inning when Collins sent a ball over the left field fence, driving in three runs to extend their lead to 9-4. 
  • Following a Nathan DeWitte single to kick off the 8th inning, Turner brought the score to 9-6 as he hit a two run home run to left field. The Blue and White would cut the deficit to two as Charneco singled up the middle, driving in Mason Satterfield home. 
  • In the top of the 9th inning, Turner would walk to start the inning before coming around to score on a wild pitch. With the bases loaded, Charneco came up clutch, driving in three runs on a double to right center field to give the Generals their first lead of game two. The Blue and White would head into the final frame with an 11-9 lead.
  • The Hornets would tie the game in the 9th as Garcia and Jones drove in runs on singles to left field. With the bases loaded, J. Gordon would draw a walk to bring home the winning run to give the Hornets the series sweep over the Generals.

W&L GAME NOTES
  • The Generals fall to 10-10 on the season and 4-6 in ODAC play while dropping their third straight game. 
  • Paul Ramseur led the Generals' offense at the plate with a 6-for-9 (.667) effort while two doubles and three runs scored. Campbell Charneco recorded a team-high seven runs batted in his 4-for-9 (.444) day at the plate.
  • Ben Sundell (1-1) was credited with the loss in the first game after allowing two runs on six hits in his four innings of work. Jimmy Horvath fell to 0-2 on the season after allowing three runs on six hits in his two innings pitched in game two.
LYNCHBURG GAME NOTES
  • The 21st-ranked Hornets move to 14-6 on the season and 5-2 in conference play. 
  • Quinn Madden led the Hornets' offense with a 6-for-10 effort at the plate with six RBI. 
  • Nathaniel Mack (2-0) earned the win on the mound after pitching 1.1 shutout innings with two strikeouts. Colin McGuire earned his second save on the season as he tossed two shutout innings with two strikeouts.
