W&L Knocks off Hamilton, 8-2, for Third Straight Win

LEXINGTON, Va. - Meeting on the diamond for the fourth time in program history and the first time since 1975, the Washington and Lee University baseball team defeated Hamilton College 8-2 on Tuesday afternoon at Cap'n Dick Smith Field. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Generals (8-5) got on the board early as Frankie Maloof blasted a three-run home run to give the Blue and White an 3-0 lead in the 1st inning. 
  • In the bottom of the 2nd, Zach Senders drew a walk before putting himself into scoring position as he stole second base. Nick Lagges drove him in the next at-bat with a double to left center field, putting W&L 4-0.
  • After three scoreless frames from both squads, the Generals extended their lead to six in the bottom of the sixth inning. Maloof drew a walk to start the inning before moving to third on a balk and a bunt by Jonathan French
  • Maloof came around to score as Ethan Zulueta ripped a single through the middle of the infield. Senders and Zulueta both attempted a double steal and following an error by the Continentals' catcher, Zulueta came around to score to put the Generals up 6-0.
  • French brought home the seventh run of the game, driving in Lagges on a sacrifice fly to center field before Zulueta drove in his second run of the game on a single to left field. 
  • The Continentals (2-3) scored their first run of the game on a wild pitch before pinch hitter Quinn Perkins drove in Lucas Herman on a single through the left side of the infield, cutting the deficit to six. 
  • Raleigh Craft closed out the game for the Generals on the mound, pitching 1.1 innings with one hit allowed and one strikeout. 
W&L GAME NOTES
  • The Generals improved to 8-5 on the season, winning their third-straight game this season. 
  • Ethan Zulueta led the charge on offense with a .500 batting average (2-for-4) while driving in two runs. Frankie Maloof drove in a team-high three runs on a home run in the first inning. 
  • The Blue and White swiped eight bases this afternoon while Nick Lagges led all players with three stolen bases. Zach Senders swiped two bags in the win while Drew Larsen, French and Zulueta each had one. 

HAMILTON GAME NOTES
  • Hamilton fell to 2-3 on their young season, dropping their second-straight game against Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) teams. 
  • Greg Kopp and Ethan Righter led the Continentals offense with two hits each Kopp was 2-for-3 at the plate while Righter was 2-for-2 with a walk. 
  • Jackson Johns and Aden Soroca each stole one base this afternoon.

  • The Generals welcome the nation's top-team on Wednesday afternoon as they square off against the No. 1-ranked Shenandoah University Hornets at 3:30 p.m. at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.
