KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - In their final game of the D3 Showcase, the Washington and Lee University baseball team used three multiple run innings to knock off Susquehanna University 11-6 on Sunday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The River hawks (1-4) got to work early as they loaded the bases after Lance Book drew a walk. Michael Mancuso put Susquehanna up 4-0 as he blasted a grand slam to left field.
- The Generals' (3-4) offense wasted no time as Nick Lagges cut the deficit to three as he hit a solo home run to right center field. W&L had runners on first and second as Drew Larsen doubled to right center and Mike Carpenter was hit by a pitch.
- Jaden Keuhner drove Larsen in with a single through the middle before Carpenter crossed the plate on a balk by Tyler Rigot.
- Paul Ramseur put himself in scoring position as he found the right field gap for a double. Nick Lagges roped a double down the left field line, driving in Ramseur to tie the game at four.
- The Blue and White took their first lead of the afternoon in the bottom of the third as Jonathan French stole third and reached home after the River hawks catcher soared the ball into left field, giving the Generals a 5-4 lead.
- W&L scored three more runs in the bottom of the 5th inning, Andrew Thornton led off the inning with a solo home run before Carpenter doubled to left field. Carpenter came around to score as French reached first throwing error, French would later score on the second error of the inning, putting the Generals up 8-5.
- Taylor Hmielewski of Susquehanna drew a walk early in the sixth inning before coming across for the River hawks first run since the first inning with a Sean McCulloch single to left field.
- Carpenter roped a double to left center field to drive in Ramseur and Thornton to extend their lead to four. Campbell Charneco drove in Carpenter with a single to left field, giving the Blue and White an 11-6 lead.
W&L GAME NOTES
- The Blue and White snapped a three-game losing streak with the win, producing ten hits for the third time this season and scoring a season-high eleven runs.
- Sims DeLong (1-1) earned the win on the mound after four innings of work. DeLong struck out three batters, allowing three hits and two runs. Cooper Charneco earned his first save of his career as he pitched three shutout innings, striking out five batters. The Generals pitching staff struck out a 12 batters for the fourth time this season.
- Mike Carpenter led the Generals offense, going 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs and a walk. Paul Ramseur (2-for-5) and Nick Lagges (2-for-4) each recorded two hits while Lagges drove in two runs.
- Andrew Thronton and Lagges blasted homers this afternoon while four Generals recorded extra base hits.
- Jonathan French swiped a team-high two bases while Ramseur stole one base.
SUSQUEHANNA GAME NOTES
- Susquehanna falls to 1-4 on the young season, losing their third-straight game.
- Tyler Rigot pitched four innings for the River hawks, allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits while striking out six batters. Aidan Martin took the loss (0-1) after giving up six runs, five earned, in his 3.2 innings of action.
- Tony Rossi was 2-for-5 at the plate for the River hawks with two singles and a strikeout. Michael Mancuso (1-for-4) recorded a game-high four RBIs with a grand slam in the first inning.
- The River hawks stole a game-high ten stolen bases while Michael Biuso and Tony Rossi each swiped two bags.
