Coleman pushes No. 32 W&L past No. 38 Haverford in decisive singles match

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Senior Connor Coleman secured the winning point in the final singles match of the day, as the No. 32 Washington and Lee men's tennis team defeated No. 38 Haverford, 5-4, on Saturday.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Fords (0-2) held a 2-1 lead after doubles play, picking up wins at the top two positions, while Coleman and senior James Kurani handled Justin Minerva and Max Beckwith, 8-3, at No. 3. The Generals' (3-1) responded by claiming the first two singles points of the match, as senior Evan Erb won at No. 1, 6-3, 3-0 (ret.), before first-year Heys Parker picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 4.
 
Haverford's Aiden Kim tied the team score at two all, downing Kurani, 6-4, 7-5, at No. 3, before first-year Sanjheev Rao put the Blue and White back in the lead with a 6-1, 6-1 win over James McKenzie at No. 5. Marko Arboleda kept the Fords alive with a win at No. 2, but he a junior Will Kistler needed a 10-point, third set tiebreak to decide the winner. Arboleda prevailed, 6-2, 6-7 (4), 1-0 (5).
 
In the day's final match, Coleman matched up across Chait Krishna. The two needed a 13th game to decide who gained the one-set lead, and Coleman cruised in the breaker, 7-1. Krishna rebounded by taking the second set, 6-3, to force the decisive 10-point break. Coleman then outscored Krishna, 10-5, to claim a win for himself and his teammates.

The Generals will look for a 2-0 weekend in Newport News on Sunday when they take on Christopher Newport in a 10:30 a.m. first serve.
