No. 11 Women’s Volleyball Defeats Stevens, Secures Spot in Regional Finals

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The 11th-ranked Washington and Lee University women's volleyball team defeated Stevens Institute of Technology, 3-1, on Friday evening to secure their spot in the Regional Finals for the first time since 2006.

HOW IT HAPPENED vs STEVENS (W&L, 3-1 | 25-16, 25-12, 20-25, 25-12)
  • After trading points early in the first set, the Generals (34-2) took a 6-3 lead following a solo block by Riley Debiec and a kill by Grace Mitchener. The Blue and White extended their lead to 13-8 with a 6-2 run that included kills from Mitchener, Avery Myers, Katie Stone, Allie Buchholz, and Debiec. Neither team managed a run longer than two points late in the set, but W&L rattled off four straight points thanks to kills from Debiec and Emery Goerig, along with a pair of errors from Stevens (28-7). Debiec capped off the first set with a kill off a Buchholz assist, giving the Generals a 25-16 win in the first frame.
  • Vivian Lisboa got the Ducks on the board early in the second set with a kill. However, the Blue and White responded with a dominant 14-0 run to take a commanding lead. During this stretch, Myers tallied five kills, while Debiec and Goerig each added one. Emily Schellenberg shined at the service line, contributing four aces. After a Mallory Eder kill ended the run, W&L went on a 5-2 run, highlighted by a Debiec kill and a block from Mitchener and Debiec, extending their lead to 19-2. The Ducks narrowed the gap with a five-point run, but kills from Debiec, Mitchener, and Stone, along with a Buchholz service ace, secured a 25-12 win and a two-set lead.
  • The Generals opened the third set with a 5-1 lead, powered by three kills from Myers and one from Debiec. Stevens answered with a 6-1 run, including two service aces from Molly Harris, to take a 7-6 lead. Both teams traded points until the Ducks went on a 4-1 run to establish an 18-15 advantage. W&L regained the lead with a 5-1 run, featuring a kill and service ace from Mitchener and three attacking errors by Stevens. However, the Ducks closed the set with six consecutive points to win 25-20, forcing a fourth set.
  • In the fourth set, the Generals and Ducks exchanged points early until W&L went on an eight-point run to take an 11-3 lead. This stretch included kills from Schellenberg, Myers, Debiec, and Mitchener. Stevens cut the deficit to eight, but another lengthy W&L run pushed the score to 20-9. The six-point burst was highlighted by kills from Debiec and Myers and a Penelope Quiles service ace. After a kill from Stevens' Parker Adkins, the Blue and White reached match point with a 4-0 run, featuring two kills from Mitchener, one from Myers, and a Maddie Weller service ace. Although Stevens trimmed the lead with a 3-0 run, Debiec sealed the victory with a kill off a Buchholz assist, giving the Generals a four-set win.

TOP PERFORMERS
  • Debiec led the match with 16 kills on 35 attempts, committing only two errors for an impressive .400 hitting percentage, while also posting a team-high four blocks. Myers and Mitchener each recorded 14 kills, achieving double digits in the win. Parker Adkins led the Ducks with 11 kills on 29 attempts, hitting .172.
  • Buchholz posted a match-high 44 assists while leading the team with 19 digs. This marked her 26th match with 30 or more assists and her 22nd double-double of the season. Alexa Brucculeri led the Ducks with 21 assists, while Molly Harris contributed 16.
  • Vivi Vasquez and Penelope Quiles each dug out 14 attacks for the Blue and White, while Mitchener added 12. Mitchener's 12 digs secured her 23rd match of the season with double-digit kills and digs. Liz Patterson posted a match-high 28 digs for Stevens, with Sarah Bolduc and Harris also recording double-digit digs.
  • Schellenberg led the match with a career-high four service aces, while Buchholz, Quiles, Mitchener, and Maddie Weller each added one. Harris paced the Ducks with two aces, while Vivian Lisboa contributed one.
  • Meg Dion led the match with five total blocks, including one solo, while five other Ducks registered at least one block. Goerig tallied three blocks (one solo) for the Generals, with Mitchener and Myers each adding one.

W&L GAME NOTES
  • The Generals improved to 34-2 on the season and secured their spot in the Regional Finals for the first time since 2006, marking only the second time in program history.
  • W&L led in four of the six team categories during the match, including points (70), aces (8), and assists (52). The Blue and White recorded 56 kills on 167 attempts with 17 errors, finishing with a .251 hitting percentage. They posted a match-high .389 percentage in the fourth set and hit .326 in the first set.
  • Defensively, the Generals limited the Ducks' offense to a .115 hitting percentage while forcing 26 errors. W&L held Stevens to a negative hitting percentage (-.065) in the second set and just .077 in the fourth set.

  • The 11th-ranked Generals will take on Christopher Newport University in the Regional Finals tomorrow night for a chance to make the Elite Eight for the first time in program history. First serve is set for 7 p.m. inside the Freeman Center.
