No. 11 Women’s Volleyball Sweeps John Jay in NCAA Regional Quarterfinals

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The 11th-ranked Washington and Lee University women's volleyball team kicked off the NCAA Division III Tournament with a straight sets win over John Jay College to secure the first win in the big dance since 2010.

HOW IT HAPPENED vs JOHN JAY (W&L, 3-0 | 25-16, 25-16, 25-11)
  • The Generals (33-2) kicked off the match with a 5-0 run, featuring a kill from Avery Myers, a service ace from Emily Schellenberg, and a block by Riley Debiec and Allie Buchholz. After John Jay (22-7) cut the deficit to one, the Blue and White went on a 6-2 run to extend their lead to 15-10. The run was highlighted by three kills from Grace Mitchener and one from Emery Goerig. Another 5-1 run by the Generals pushed their lead to 20-14, thanks to a Schellenberg service ace and a block by Goerig and Myers. Although Josanne Lewis cut the deficit to five with a kill, a subsequent 5-1 run capped off the first frame. This final run featured kills from Myers, Buchholz, and Schellenberg, giving the Generals a 25-16 win.
  • The Bloodhounds found some momentum in the second set, rattling off four straight points to take a 4-1 lead early in the set. Back-to-back kills from Myers and Riley Debiec kick started a 7-1 run for the Blue and White, putting them back in front, 8-5. Shortly after, W&L went on another 7-1 run, fueled by kills from Debiec and Mitchener, as well as several errors by the Bloodhounds. John Jay battled back, cutting the deficit to two with six straight points, aided by a service ace from Malia Reyes and a kill by Madison Reyes. However, a third 7-1 run from the Generals gave them a 23-15 lead late in the set. This run featured a pair of kills from both Myers and Debiec. Back-to-back kills by Myers and Mitchener secured another 25-16 set win, putting W&L up two sets to none.
  • Goerig started the third set strong, finishing off a Buchholz assist for the first point. Her kill launched a 6-1 run that included a pair of kills from Debiec, one from Myers, and a block by Debiec and Myers. Following a service error from the Bloodhounds, the Generals rattled off seven straight points to take a commanding 15-3 lead. This lengthy run featured four kills from Mitchener, one from Debiec, a Maddie Weller service ace, and a solo block from Debiec. After trading points for a short stretch, Myers delivered back-to-back kills to extend the Generals' lead to 13. Myers and Mitchener combined for two more kills to bring the score to 23-10 before Debiec and Mitchener closed out the match with consecutive kills. The Generals secured their first NCAA Tournament win since 2010, taking the third set 25-11.
TOP PERFORMERS
  • Mitchener posted her 20th double-double of the season, leading the match with 14 kills on 36 attempts for a .278 hitting percentage, while also contributing 12 digs. Myers and Debiec each recorded 10 kills in the win. Josanne Lewis led John Jay with eight kills on 33 attempts.
  • Buchholz tallied 33 assists in the victory, adding 13 digs. This game marked her 25th match of the season with 30 or more assists. Meghan Smith led the Bloodhounds with 13 assists and 18 digs.
  • Vivi Vasquez posted a match-high 24 digs while contributing three assists. Buchholz, Penelope Quiles, and Mitchener also recorded double-digit digs in the win. Debiec registered a match-high five blocks, including one solo stop, while Myers followed closely with four blocks.
  • Schellenberg and Malia Reyes of John Jay led the match with two service aces each, while Weller and Kristin Gretener added one apiece.

W&L GAME NOTES
  • The Blue and White improved to 33-2 on the season, marking the second-most wins in program history. This victory is their first in the NCAA Tournament since 2010, when they defeated Mount St. Joseph 3-1 in the first round. W&L will now make their seventh trip to the Regional Semifinals since 2001.
  • The Blue and White excelled in every facet of the match, leading all six team categories, including aces (3), blocks (7), assists (40), and digs (79).
  • Offensively, the team recorded 41 kills on 124 attempts with 17 errors, finishing with a .194 hitting percentage. They posted a match-high .400 hitting percentage in the third and final set.
