No. 15 Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Past CNU, Marymount

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The 15th-ranked Washington and Lee University women's volleyball team extended their winning streak to seven matches as they downed Christopher Newport University and Marymount University on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED vs CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT (W&L, 3-0 | 25-19, 25-15, 25-13)
  • The Generals (26-2, 12-0 ODAC) jumped out to a 4-2 lead with three kills from Riley Debiec and one from Avery Myers. W&L extended their lead to 10-6 following a 6-2 run that included kills from Debiec, Grace Mitchener, Emily Schellenberg, and Alyssah McGuire. The Blue and White maintained a steady lead until the Captains (19-8) scored four unanswered points to cut the deficit to one. Four kills from Myers and an attacking error gave the Generals a 22-17 advantage before a kill from Mitchener and another CNU error secured a 25-19 win in the first set.
  • The Generals came out strong in the second set, taking a commanding 8-1 lead with four kills from Debiec, one each from Myers and Mitchener, and a Schellenberg service ace. Additional kills from Debiec and Mitchener, along with two errors by the Captains, put the Generals up 13-5. Back-to-back kills from Myers extended the Blue and White's lead to eight late in the set. After a kill by Kyla McIntyre brought the score to 21-15, Myers recorded three straight kills to help the Generals claim the second set, 25-15.
  • In the third set, after CNU took the opening point, the Generals responded with a 4-1 run that featured two kills from Myers and two service errors by the Captains. The teams traded points before the Blue and White scored seven unanswered to take a 14-7 lead, highlighted by kills from Myers, Goerig, and McGuire, as well as a Mitchener service ace. The Generals gained a 13-point lead after another six-point run, which included a kill from Debiec and blocks by Debiec, Buchholz, and Mitchener. Buchholz sealed the sweep for the Generals with a final kill, marking their first win over CNU since 2013.
TOP PERFORMERS
  • Myers led all players with 16 kills on 39 attempts, achieving a .282 hitting percentage, while Debiec recorded 13 kills on 26 attempts with only one error, resulting in a .462 hitting percentage.
  • Allie Buchholz contributed a match-high 24 assists in the win, along with 15 digs and three kills. Mitchener and Schellenberg each recorded a service ace for the Blue and White, with Mitchener also tallying a match-high 18 digs. Vivi Vasquez added 16 digs, and Penelope Quiles contributed 11.
  • Buchholz, Mitchener, and Debiec each posted three blocks in the win, while Emery Goerig added one block.
 

HOW IT HAPPENED vs MARYMOUNT (W&L, 3-0 | 25-15, 25-15, 25-11)
  • The Generals and Saints (8-20) exchanged points at the start of the match before the Generals took a five-point lead with kills from Goerig and Myers, along with a service ace from Mitchener. Later in the set, the Blue and White extended their lead to 17-11 after back-to-back kills from Myers and Debiec. A 6-0 run then pushed their lead to 23-13, featuring two service aces from Buchholz and three kills from Mitchener. Goerig finished off a Buchholz assist to claim the first set, 25-15.
  • W&L opened the second set with a 6-1 run, highlighted by kills from Debiec and Myers and a block by Goerig and Debiec. A following 5-1 run extended the Generals' lead to 11-3 as Myers, Mitchener, Debiec, and Schellenberg each added kills. The Blue and White went up by ten after Mitchener and Myers combined for three straight kills. After some back-and-forth action, the Generals sealed a 25-15 win in set two with a Goerig kill and a Mitchener service ace.
  • The Generals began the third and final set with a dominant 10-1 run, fueled by kills from Mitchener, Debiec, and Myers, as well as a series of errors by the Saints. Mitchener and Buchholz registered back-to-back blocks a few points later, putting the Generals up 14-3. Another three-point run gave the Blue and White a 21-8 lead as Goerig and Myers each recorded kills, with Goerig also blocking an attack from Sabrina Schoeberlein. The Generals secured their 26th win of the season with a 4-1 closing run, highlighted by kills from Myers and Debiec.
TOP PERFORMERS
  • Myers led the match against the Saints with 13 kills on 32 attempts, achieving a .313 hitting percentage, while Debiec (12 kills) and Mitchener (10 kills) also reached double figures for the Generals.
  • Buchholz contributed 38 assists in the win, along with nine digs, marking her 20th match this season with 30 or more assists. Mitchener and Buchholz each recorded two service aces, while Schellenberg and Myers added one apiece.
  • Goerig posted a match-high four blocks in the win, while Buchholz, Mitchener, and Debiec each added two. Vasquez led all players with 17 digs, and Quiles contributed 15.
W&L GAME NOTES
  • With these two wins, the Generals are now 26-2 on the season, extending their winning streak to seven matches. The Blue and White also earned their first victory over Christopher Newport since defeating the Captains in four sets on October 26, 2013.
  • W&L tallied 90 kills on 242 attempts with 26 errors, resulting in a .264 hitting percentage across both matches. They posted a match-high .333 hitting percentage in the second set against CNU.
  • Defensively, they held both opponents to a combined .058 hitting percentage, forcing 40 errors on 259 attempts. W&L also recorded 12 blocks across both matches, along with 137 digs.
  • Myers led the Generals' offense with 29 kills on 71 attempts for a .295 hitting percentage, while Debiec contributed 25 kills on 53 attempts with only two errors, achieving a .434 hitting percentage.
  • Buchholz led the team with 62 assists over six sets, adding 24 digs and two service aces. Vasquez anchored the defensive unit with 33 digs, while Mitchener contributed 31 digs across both matches.

  • The Blue and White will head to Atlanta, Ga. for the final weekend of the regular season as they will compete at the Emory National Invitational on Nov. 8 & 9. The Blue and White will take on No. 5 Emory University on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. before facing off against Oglethopre University (10:30 a.m.) and Maryville College (12:30 p.m.) on Saturday.
