ATLANTA, Ga. - The 14th-ranked Washington and Lee University women's volleyball team defeated No. 5 Emory University (Ga.) in five sets on Friday evening at the Emory National Invitational.
HOW IT HAPPENED vs #5 EMORY (W&L, 3-2 | 25-21, 25-17, 17-25, 14-25, 15-12)
- Emily Schellenberg kicked off the match with a service ace to score the first point. Both teams traded points for the majority of the first set, staying within one point of each other until an Avery Myers service ace kick-started a 3-0 run for the Generals (27-2). Myers added another service ace, while Grace Mitchener finished off an Allie Buchholz assist to put W&L up 15-12. The Eagles (21-2) tied the match after a three-point swing, but the Generals responded with three straight kills from Buchholz, Mitchener, and Schellenberg to retake a three-point lead. Back-to-back kills from Riley Debiec and Alyssah McGuire gave the Blue and White a 23-19 lead before a Mitchener kill secured a 25-21 win in the opening frame.
- Following attacking errors by both teams to start the second set, the Generals went on a 3-0 run thanks to a kill from Debiec and two additional errors by the Eagles. The Blue and White scored four unanswered points to take a 12-8 lead after a kill from McGuire and three consecutive attack errors by Emory. The Generals extended their lead to 18-12 with another 3-0 run, featuring two kills from Mitchener and one from Myers. Back-to-back kills from Myers and Debiec secured a 25-17 win in set two.
- Both teams stayed within one point of each other until the Eagles went on a 4-1 run to take a 13-10 lead. The Blue and White battled back, cutting the deficit to two after Debiec and Mitchener each recorded two kills. Another 5-1 run by Emory gave them a 22-16 lead, and they went on to win the third set 25-17 after three consecutive kills.
- A McGuire kill and a Schellenberg service ace gave the Generals an early 2-0 lead in the fourth set, but the Eagles responded with a 7-0 run to take a five-point lead. Debiec and Mitchener recorded back-to-back kills, bringing the score to 9-7 in favor of the Eagles. Both teams traded points for the remainder of the set before Emory scored three straight points to win the fourth set 25-14.
- Emory took a 4-3 lead in the final set after a kill from Alana Dawson, but Debiec finished off a Buchholz assist to tie the match at four. A kill by Emery Goerig and an attacking error by the Eagles gave the Blue and White a 9-8 advantage. Four consecutive errors by Emory pushed the Generals to a 14-11 lead, and Mitchener secured the five-set victory by finishing off a Buchholz assist.
TOP PERFORMERS
- Debiec and Mitchener led the match with 17 kills each, with Debiec posting a match-high .368 hitting percentage.
- Buchholz recorded 46 assists and added 13 digs in the win. Vivi Vasquez led the Blue and White with 18 digs and contributed five assists.
- Schellenberg posted a match-high two service aces, while Myers added one.
W&L GAME NOTES
- The Generals improved to 27-2 on the season, marking their first win against Emory since 2003. This victory also snapped the Eagles' 17-game winning streak, which began on September 7 against #9 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
- The Blue and White recorded 60 kills on 171 attempts, achieving a .246 hitting percentage overall, with a team-high .319 hitting percentage in the first set.

- The 14th-ranked Generals will wrap up the regular season with matches against Oglethorpe University and Maryville College tomorrow afternoon.
