LEXINGTON, Va. - The 12th-ranked Washington and Lee University women's volleyball team is moving on to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament Semifinals for the 15th straight season after sweeping Averett University on Tuesday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED vs AVERETT (W&L, 3-0 | 25-13, 25-17, 25-18)
- The Generals (30-2) kicked off the match with a strong 12-2 run, highlighted by three kills from Grace Mitchener, a kill from Avery Myers, and a block by Allie Buchholz and Riley Debiec. After a kill by Averett's (12-19) Destiny McIntosh, the Blue and White responded with a 5-2 run to extend their lead to 17-5. This run featured kills from Debiec and Katie Stone, along with a service ace by Vivi Vasquez. Although the Cougars rallied with four straight points to cut the lead to eight, a 7-3 run put the Generals within one point of winning the first set. The final stretch included back-to-back kills from Debiec, a kill from K. Stone, and a solo block by Emery Goerig. Debiec then sealed the set with a final kill from a Buchholz assist, securing a 25-13 first-set victory.
- The Cougars took a 5-3 lead in the second set after two kills, a block, and a service ace. However, the Blue and White responded with a 5-1 run, reclaiming the lead. This run featured three kills from Mitchener and one from Buchholz, pushing the Generals ahead 8-6. A few points later, W&L stretched their lead to 15-10 after another 5-1 run, thanks to two kills from Myers and a block by Goerig and Mitchener. The Generals maintained their momentum with a 7-2 run, starting after a McIntosh attacking error, to extend the lead to 22-14. This run included a block by Mitchener and Buchholz, a service ace by Myers, and kills from Debiec and Mitchener. Consecutive blocks from Goerig, K. Stone, and Myers clinched a 25-17 win in the second set.
- The third set began with the teams trading the first six points before the Cougars pulled ahead with a 4-1 run to lead 7-4. However, the Generals capitalized on four attacking errors by Averett and added kills from Myers and Goerig to take a 10-8 lead. Averett tied the set at ten with back-to-back kills from Emma Nash but a service error by Averett opened the door for a 5-1 Generals' run. This run included three kills by Mitchener and one from Goerig to give W&L a 19-14 lead.. The Blue and White then secured the straight-sets win with a 6-1 run, featuring two kills from Myers and one from Debiec.
TOP PERFORMERS
- Debiec led the Blue and White with 12 kills on 18 attempts and zero errors, achieving a match-high .667 hitting percentage. Mitchener followed closely with 11 kills on 32 attempts, hitting .250.
- Buchholz led the match with 29 assists, while Dayton Moore led the Cougars with 19. Erin Gray of Averett recorded a match-high 23 digs, while Mitchener led W&L with 13. Vasquez and Myers each contributed 11 digs in the win.
- Goerig recorded a match-high of four total blocks (one solo, three assisted), while Mitchener and Buchholz each added two.
- Myers led the match with two service aces, and Vasquez added one.
W&L GAME NOTES
- The Generals move to 30-2 on the season while reaching the ODAC Semifinals for the 15th straight season.
- The Blue and White registered 36 kills on 101 attempts with eight errors for a .277 hitting percentage while hitting a match-high .293 in the third set. W&L led each team category including service aces (3), blocks (6), assists (33) and digs (53). They limited the Cougars offense to a .025 hitting percentage, the third lowest mark this season for opponents.
