LEXINGTON, Va. - The 12th-ranked Washington and Lee University women's volleyball team punched their ticket to their second straight Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Championship on Thursday evening as they defeated the University of Lynchburg in straight sets.
HOW IT HAPPENED vs LYNCHBURG (W&L, 3-0 | 25-20, 25-17, 25-19)
- Lynchburg (19-12) took a 5-3 lead after a kill by Leah DiNardo and a Generals' attacking error. Back-to-back kills from Grace Mitchener tied the set at five before the Hornets went on a 3-1 run to regain a two-point lead. The Blue and White (31-2) claimed their first lead of the set with a 7-1 run, featuring kills from Mitchener, Avery Myers, and Riley Debiec. The Hornets closed the gap to within one, but a kill from Debiec started a 4-1 run that included an Allie Buchholz kill and a block by Mitchener and Buchholz, giving W&L an 18-14 lead. Following a Lynchburg service error, Debiec and Buchholz stuffed Kailey Keough's attack, sealing a 25-20 win in the first set.
- The Blue and White opened the second set with a 6-3 run, highlighted by kills from Myers and Mitchener and four Hornets' errors. Soon after, the Generals went on a 6-2 run to extend their lead to 12-6. This stretch included kills from Debiec, Emily Schellenberg, and Katie Stone, as well as blocks by Emery Goerig, Mitchener, Buchholz, and Schellenberg. Both teams traded points until a Hornets' service error led to a Vivi Vasquez service ace and a Schellenberg kill, putting the Blue and White up 18-10. W&L then took an 11-point lead with a five-point run, featuring kills from Mitchener, Myers, and K. Stone, plus a Mitchener service ace. Although Lynchburg responded with a four-point run, Myers finished off the set with a kill from a Buchholz assist, securing the second set 25-17.
- In the third set, the teams traded points until tied at six, when the Generals broke away with an 8-1 run to take a 14-7 lead. This surge included blocks from Goerig and Mitchener, as well as K. Stone and Goerig, along with kills by Myers and Mitchener. The block party continued later in the set, with Buchholz and Debiec capping off a 3-0 run by blocking Ava Meinhardt's attack, giving the Blue and White an 18-9 advantage. The Hornets fought back to narrow the score to 22-19, but consecutive kills from Myers and a Lynchburg error secured the straight-sets victory for the Generals.
TOP PERFORMERS
- Myers led the match with 14 kills on 38 attempts, achieving a .342 hitting percentage. Ava Meinhardt led the Hornets with 13 kills on 25 attempts, hitting .360. Jaina Leek recorded a match-high 37 assists for Lynchburg, while Buchholz led the Generals with 34 assists.
- Vasquez posted a match-high 15 digs, with Mitchener close behind with 13. Morgan Clarke led Lynchburg with ten digs. Vasquez, Mitchener, Buchholz, and Schellenberg each contributed service aces in the win, while Goerig led the match with six blocks.
W&L GAME NOTES
- The Blue and White improved to 31-2 on the season, tying for the third-most wins in program history. With this victory, the Generals secured their spot in the conference championship match for the second consecutive year.
- The Generals led in every team category, including aces (4), blocks (10), assists (41), and digs (51). As a team, they recorded 43 kills on 112 attempts with 11 errors, achieving a .286 hitting percentage. They posted a set-high .313 hitting percentage in the second set with 14 kills on 32 attempts.
