LEXINGTON, Va. - The 19th-ranked Washington and Lee University women's volleyball team sailed past Virginia Wesleyan University on Wednesday night, sweeping the Marlins in straight sets to continue their best start in program history.
HOW IT HAPPENED vs VIRGINIA WESLEYAN (W&L, 3-0 | 25-14, 25-13, 25-13)
- After the Marlins (13-3, 3-1 ODAC) jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first set, the Generals (17-0, 7-0 ODAC) responded with a 13-4 run to take a 14-7 lead. The run was highlighted by three kills from Avery Myers and Grace Mitchener, while Emily Schellenberg added a pair. An Avery Lewis kill cut the deficit to six for the Marlins, but the Generals capped off the set with a 6-1 run to claim the first frame 25-14. The run featured three kills from Mitchener and a kill from Emery Goerig.
- Virginia Wesleyan took a 3-2 lead following a 3-1 run, but the Blue and White responded with five unanswered points to take a three-point advantage. Myers kicked off the run by finishing off an Allie Buchholz assist, followed by three attacking errors from the Marlins. W&L extended their lead to 14-7 after Mitchener delivered three straight kills, capped off by a Goerig kill. An 8-1 run gave the Generals a 23-11 lead, as Riley Debiec and Mitchener each recorded kills, and Penelope Quiles added a service ace. The Blue and White claimed the second set, 25-13, with Myers and Mitchener recording back-to-back kills.
- The Generals' offense stayed hot in the third set, opening with a 6-2 run that featured kills from Myers, Schellenberg, Mitchener, and Goerig. Four kills from Mitchener and a Marlins attacking error gave the Generals a 15-8 lead, and a 5-1 run extended the lead to 10 points late in the set. The run included kills from Mitchener, Goerig, Myers, and Debiec. The Marlins battled back, cutting the lead to six, but the Generals secured the sweep with a 5-1 run, highlighted by two kills from Debiec and a service ace from Myers.
TOP PERFORMERS
- Grace Mitchener led all players with a match-high 21 kills on 41 attempts for a career-high .512 hitting percentage. She also added eight digs and two block assists. Avery Myers contributed 14 kills on 31 attempts for a .323 hitting percentage, while Emery Goerig and Riley Debiec each recorded six kills.
- Allie Buchholz dished out a match-high 42 assists, the second most this season, and added four digs and two block assists in the win. Buchholz has recorded 30 or more assists in 11 matches this season while ranking in the top ten in program history with 1,836 assists.
- Vivi Vasquez led the match with 24 digs and added a match-high two service aces. Myers dug out 11 attacks, while Mitchener and Emily Schellenberg each recorded eight digs.
- Debiec led all players with four block assists, while Myers, Mitchener, Buchholz, and Goerig each added two block assists.
W&L GAME NOTES
- W&L's 17 straight wins mark the best start in program history, surpassing the 2021 spring team for consecutive victories. The Generals registered their ninth straight sweep of the season, not dropping a set since Sept. 14, when they defeated Carnegie Mellon in five sets at the Randolph-Macon tournament.
- The Generals dominated in every facet of the match, recording four service aces, six blocks, 47 assists, and 58 digs. The Blue and White tallied 51 kills on 115 attempts for a .339 hitting percentage.
- W&L's defense stifled the Marlins' high-powered offense, holding them to their worst offensive performance of the season. The Marlins managed just 25 kills with 14 errors, hitting .105 overall, including a -.074 hitting percentage in the second set.
