BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Washington and Lee University women's volleyball team returned to the court after a seven day break, taking down Bridgewater College 4-1 to extend their winning streak to 18 matches.
HOW IT HAPPENED vs BRIDGEWATER (W&L, 3-1 | 26-24, 21-25, 25-19, 25-20)
- After the Generals (18-0, 8-0 ODAC) jumped out to a 3-1 lead following a kill and service ace from Grace Mitchener, the Eagles (14-4, 6-2 ODAC) responded with an 8-2 run to take a 9-5 lead. The Blue and White battled back with their own 8-1 run, taking a three-point lead, featuring kills from Mitchener, Avery Myers, and Allie Buchholz. The teams traded points, with neither gaining more than a one-point lead, until back-to-back kills from Mitchener gave W&L a 22-20 advantage. An Emily Schellenberg kill and a Buchholz service ace pushed the Generals ahead 24-22, but back-to-back kills from the Eagles tied the match at 24. After a BC service error, Myers finished off a Buchholz assist to claim the first frame 26-24.
- In the second set, the teams traded one-point leads until the Generals rattled off four unanswered points to take a 14-11 lead. However, the Eagles responded with four straight points to regain the lead. Another Bridgewater run gave them a 19-16 advantage before they ended W&L's streak of sweeps with a 4-1 run, claiming the second set 25-21. Their final run included a kill from Brooklyn Williams and three W&L errors.
- A kill from Gabby Atwell tied the third set at three before the Generals went on a 10-3 run to take a 13-6 lead, highlighted by four kills from Mitchener and three from Schellenberg. Emery Goerig and Riley Debiec also added kills during the scoring run. The Blue and White extended their lead to 20-12 after Mitchener and Schellenberg recorded kills. Bridgewater battled back within three points, rattling off five straight, but back-to-back kills from Goerig and Myers secured a 25-19 win in the third set.
- In the fourth set, after Rachael Meyers started with a kill for the Eagles, the Generals went on a 6-1 run to take a four-point lead, with Myers, Debiec, Mitchener, and Buchholz all recording kills. W&L took a 16-9 lead following a Buchholz kill and a Reagan Stoop attacking error, but the Eagles cut the deficit to three after four straight kills from Stoop, Ashley Wise, and Ashley Rutherford. Myers kickstarted a 4-1 run for the Generals, with kills from Debiec and Mitchener, to extend the lead to 23-17. Mitchener then secured the Generals' 18th straight win of the season, finishing off a Buchholz assist to claim the fourth frame 25-20.
TOP PERFORMERS
- Grace Mitchener matched her career-high with 22 kills on 59 attempts for a .254 hitting percentage. She also added 16 digs, three block assists, and one service ace in the win. Riley Debiec posted a season-high 13 kills on 33 attempts with zero errors, hitting .394.
- Avery Myers contributed 13 kills and dug out 17 attacks for her tenth double-double of the season.
- Allie Buchholz dished out 49 assists, her second-highest total this season. She has now recorded 30 or more assists in 12 matches this season and ranks tenth in program history with 1,885 career assists.
- Vivi Vasquez led all players with a match-high 27 digs and also dished out seven assists while Penelope Quiles added a season-high 20 digs,
W&L GAME NOTES
- The Generals improved to 18-0 on the season and 8-0 in conference play with the win. They dropped their first set since Sept. 14, when they defeated Carnegie Mellon in five sets. The Blue and White have only lost seven sets this season.
- With the win, the Generals stand alone at the top of the ODAC standings as the only remaining undefeated team in conference play.
- W&L led in two team categories, recording 67 kills on 191 attempts for a .262 hitting percentage, while dishing out 62 assists. The Generals posted a match-high .348 hitting percentage in the fourth set, tallying 17 kills on 46 attempts.

- The 17th-ranked Generals head to Huntingdon, Pa. for a tri-match at Juniata College on Saturday, Oct. 12. The Blue and White will face Susquehanna at 2:30 p.m. before taking on the two-time defending National Champions and No. 1-ranked Eagles at 5 p.m.
