10/15/2024 11:00:00 AM

LEXINGTON, Va. – Washington and Lee University Head Men's Basketball Coach Chris McHugh '09 has announced the addition of recent graduate Drew Harrell '24 to the coaching staff as a volunteer assistant ahead of the 2024-25 season.

"Drew Harrell is an excellent representative of W&L Men's Basketball on and off the court," McHugh commented. "I am thrilled that he will be transitioning from team captain to volunteer assistant coach."

A four-year member of the W&L men's basketball team, Harrell appeared in 79 games in his career and compiled 643 points on 42.4 percent shooting from the field, and he added averages of 4.5 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 1.0 steals and 0.6 blocks.

Harrell stated, "I'm super excited to continue being a part of W&L hoops and I can't wait to get to work!"

Harrell excelled during his senior year, starting all 28 games for the Blue and White and averaging 12.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game, all of which were career highs. He also shot a career-best 35.1 percent from long range in 2023-24 on his way to being named a Third Team All-ODAC performer.

In the classroom, Drew was named to the ODAC All-Academic Team all four years, earned W&L Scholar Athlete status six times and twice appeared on the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District team. Harrell was also recognized to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honors Court twice, an accolade that requires a junior or senior student-athlete to carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.2 or better.

Harrell will join McHugh and Isaac Hibbard on the men's basketball coaching staff, and he will help with all facets of the program, specializing with the guards and opponent scouting.
