LEXINGTON, Va. – The 16th-ranked Washington and Lee women's basketball team put up 33 points in the third quarter alone en route to a 76-56 win over Randolph on Wednesday night for the 200th victory in the career of head coach
Christine Clancy.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
After a sluggish first two quarters saw the Generals (17-2, 11-1 ODAC) shoot 12-of-37 and make only one three to trail by a point, the team came out scorching hot to begin the third quarter. W&L scored the first 10 points of the frame, with four from sophomore
Mary Schleusner and back-to-back threes from senior
Hanna Malik to close the run.
The Generals gradually continued to pull away, outscoring the WildCats (11-7, 5-7 ODAC) 13-10 over the next four and a half minutes, before the Blue and White ended the third the same way it started, with a 10-0 run, which left the team up by a score of 64-42. Malik (11 points) and Schleusner (10 points) paced the third quarter efforts, while the team made 11-of-18 shots from the field and 5-of-10 from beyond the arc.
Randolph outscored the Generals by a slight 14-12 margin in the final period, as W&L cooled to a 4-of-13 shooting effort across the final 10 minutes. The Generals' defense continued to not allow good looks for the WildCats, however, as the visitors shot just 6-of-18 in the fourth.
W&L opened the game with an 18-14 lead through one quarter of play, and claimed the longest scoring run by either side (6-0) in the early going. The WildCats answered back with a 7-0 run in the second, followed by a first-half-ending 8-2 run to take a 32-31 lead into halftime.
TOP PERFORMERS:
Schleusner paced all players with 24 points on 11-of-16 shooting, and she added 13 rebounds and two blocks. Malik finished with 17 points and six rebounds, while sophomore
Quinn McGuinness tallied nine points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals. Junior
Cat Pettegrove and first-year
Caroline Shimp both added solid rebounding performances, with seven each and 11 points combined.
The WildCats were led by 15-point performances from both Kylie Stark and Jessica Jennings. Jennings added a team-high four steals on the defensive end, and Teniyah Crenshaw-Patterson pulled down a team-best nine rebounds.
NOTEWORTHY POINTS:
Clancy's 200th career coaching win comes in her 321st game for a 0.623 winning percentage. Her career includes a 178-115 record at W&L following a 22-6 season at Colby in 2010-11. Clancy continues to build her lead as the Generals' all-time coaching wins leader, and she also has the highest winning percentage among all coaches in program history.
Malik's 17 points moved her past Katy Wilson '13 (1,013) for 14th place on the program's all-time scoring list. She needs seven more points to pass
Erin Hughes '21 for 13th place and 19 more points to surpass Jackie Clifford '17 for 12th.
With two more blocks on Wednesday night, Schleusner became the fourth player in program history to swat 150 shots. She can tie Emma Redding '18 for third-most blocks with five more.
TEAM STATS:
W&L finished the game shooting 38.6 percent (27-70) from the field, but the Generals limited the WildCats to just 29.7 percent (22-74) shooting and 14.8 percent (4-27) from deep. The Blue and White outrebounded Randolph, 56-42, which led to a 23-15 advantage in second-chance points.
The Generals also outscored the WildCats in fastbreak points (23-5) and points in the paint (38-30), while Randolph held positive totals in points off turnovers (18-13) and bench points (21-15).
