LYNCHBURG, Va. - Playing their second match in two days, the Washington and Lee University women's volleyball dropped their first Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) match as they fell in five sets to the University of Lynchburg on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set One | 25-17 W&L
- Two errors from the Hornets and a Riley Debiec kill gave the Generals a 7-5 lead early in the first set.
- Both teams traded points until Emery Goerig and Avery Myers finished off an Allie Buchholz assist to give the Generals four point lead.
- More back and forth action led to a 20-17 lead in favor of the Generals before a Myers kill and four Lynchburg errors gave the Generals a 25-17 win in the first set.
- Myers led all players with four kills on 11 attempts for a .273 hitting percentage. Mya Green and Princess Saloifou of Lynchburg recorded three kills each with Green posting a .400 hitting percentage.
- Buchholz and Jaina Leek of Lynchburg each dished out a set-high six assists.
- Penelope Quiles dug out a set-high seven attacks while Kailey Keough of Lynchburg recorded four digs.
Set Two | 25-21 Lynchburg
- After trailing by one early in the second set, Myers kicked off a three point swing as she finished off a McKenna Cook assist to put the Generals up 4-2.
- Lynchburg held a one point advantage for most of the second set until Ava Meinhardt and Abbey Barlow recorded kills to put the Hornets up 16-12.
- W&L leveled the scoring at 20 as Myers recorded another kill and Cook recorded a service ace.
- The Hornets closed out the second set with a 5-1 run which featured kills from Kailey Keough, Morgan Clarke and Bree Spainhour to win 25-21.
- Myers led the set once again with five kills on 13 attempts for a .308 hitting percentage. Kailey Keough led the Hornets with four kills on 17 attempts for a .118 hitting percentage.
- Buchholz and Mya Green of Lynchburg led the set with eight assists.
- Cassi Blackmore of Lynchburg recorded a set-high 11 digs while Quiles dug out eight attacks.
Set Three | 25-10 W&L
- The Hornets jumped out to a 3-1 lead but after a Jania Leek service error, the Generals went on an eight point run to take a 9-3 lead. This run featured four kills from Debiec as well as two kills from Grace Mitchener.
- W&L used a five point swing to take a comfortable 15-5 lead as Goerig, Buchholz, and Mitchener each recorded kills.
- The Generals closed out the set on a 5-1 run as Debiec finished off a Buchholz assist while Cook recorded a service ace. The Hornets had three errors which helped W&L take the third set 25-10.
- Debiec led all players with five kills on eight attempts for a .625 hitting percentage. Mitchener finished the set with four kills on 12 attempts for a .167 hitting percentage.
- Kailey Keough and Regan Shanahan each recorded two kills in the set for the Hornets.
- Buchholz dished out a set-high eight assists in the third set while Mya Green of Lynchburg recorded four assists.
- Quiles dug out a set-high eight attacks while Cassi Blackmore dug out five attacks for the Hornets.
Set Four | 25-21 Lynchburg
- The Hornets fed off three straight errors from the Generals as they took a 5-2 lead early in the set.
- W&L cut the lead to two but after a Goerig kill the Hornets scored three straight points off of kills by Kailey Keough and Ava Meinhardt.
- Lynchburg held off W&L's scoring streaks as they maintained a 19-16 advantage before going on a 4-1 run to take a 23-17 lead. This run featured three kills from Keough and one from Meinhardt.
- The Blue and White stormed back, cutting the Hornets lead to two as Mitchener and Debiec recorded kills.
- Following a W&L attack error, Bree Spainhour forced a fifth set as she finished off a Jaina Leek assist to take the set 25-21.
- Keough of Lynchburg led all players with six kills on 15 attempts for a .333 hitting percentage. Myers recorded five kills on 11 attempts for a .455 hitting percentage.
- Buchholz led all players with seven assists while Jaina Leek and Mya Green led the Hornets with six assists each.
- Cassi Blackmore of Lynchburg led the set with eighth digs while Quiles dug out a team-high five attacks for W&L.
Set Five | 15-12 Lynchburg
- Lynchburg took a 4-2 lead after Bree Spainhour recorded three-straight kills but the Generals took a 6-4 lead as Goerig finished off a Buchholz assist.
- The Hornets battled back and tied the set at seven as Keough recorded her first kill of the set.
- Kills from Debiec and Myers gave the Blue and White a two point lead but the Hornets used three attack errors by the Generals to take a 12-9 lead.
- After both teams traded points, Bree Spainhour gave the Hornets their first win over the Generals since 2016.
- Spainhour of Lynchburg led all players with seven kills on nine attempts for a .778 hitting percentage. Myers led the Generals with three kills.
- Jaina Leek dished out a set-high seven assists while Buchholz led the Generals with six assists.
W&L GAME NOTES
- With the loss, the Generals fall to 12-3 on the season while suffering their first conference loss this season.
- This is the Generals first loss to Lynchburg in seven years, their last loss to the Hornets was on 10/14/2016.
- W&L recorded 53 kills on 182 attempts for a .165 hitting percentage.
- The Blue and White led the match in digs (92) and blocks (14).
LYNCHBURG GAME NOTES
- The Hornets improved their record to 6-7 overall and 3-4 in the ODAC.
- Lynchburg snapped an eight game losing streak in the all-time series.
- Lynchburg recorded 55 kills on 201 attempts for a .114 hitting percentage while leading the match in aces (4) and assists (52)
TOP PERFORMERS
- Myers led all players with a career-high 17 kills on 53 attempts for a .226 hitting percentage. Kailey Keough led the Hornets with 15 kills on 57 attempts for a .123 hitting percentage.
- Buchholz recorded a match-high 35 assists, her seventh match this season with over 30 assists. Jaina Leek dished out 24 assists while Mya Green recorded 22 assists for the Hornets.
- Ava Meinhardt recorded three service aces while Cook had two.
- Quiles of W&L and Cassi Blackmore of Lynchburg each dug out 30 attacks, Cook ranked second on the Generals with 15 digs.
- Ava Meinhardt of Lynchburg led all players with eight total blocks, seven assisted and one solo. Debeic led the Generals with six blocks.
