Women’s Volleyball Falls at No. 21 Mary Washington

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Traveling northeast of Lexington to Fredericksburg, Va. to kick off their seven-game road trip, the Washington and Lee University women's volleyball team fell in straight sets to No. 21 University of Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

Set One | 25-15 UMW
  • After Riley Debiec finished off an Allie Buchholz to tie the set at three, two kills from Jordan Lyons sent the Eagles on a three point swing to take a 6-3 lead. 
  • The Eagles scored five unanswered points to take an 11-4 lead. Lyons and Emily Flamm each recorded kills during the streak. 
  • Sydney Heifner helped cut the lead to five as she recorded back-to-back kills but the Eagles used kills from Bryanna Miller, Flamm and Lyons to take a 14-6 lead. 
  • Lyons gave UMW a 25-15 win in the first frame as she finished off a Lauren Foley set. 

Set Two | 25-19 UMW 
  • Stephanie Lynch kicked off the second set by finishing off two Buchholz assist to give W&L a 2-1 lead. 
  • Following a three point swing from the Eagles, Debiec and Avery Myers knotted the game at four with kills of their own.
  • The Generals used a UMW service error to their advantage as they scored five unanswered points to take an 11-8 lead. The streak featured kills from Emery Goerig and Heifner as well as a service ace from Grace Mitchener
  • The Eagles went on an 8-1 run to take a 20-14 lead late in the second set but the Generals would cut the lead to four as UMW recorded three-straight errors. 
  • Mary Washington would close out the second frame as Bryanna Miller finished off a Brenna Campbell assist for a 25-19 win. 

Set Three | 25-18 UMW
  • UMW came out firing in the third set as they took a 10-3 lead, forcing a W&L timeout. 
  • The Blue and White fed off an Eagle mistake as they scored six unanswered points to cut the lead to one. Goerig recorded two kills while Heifner notched one during the Generals' streak. 
  • After both teams traded points, Diane Pierre-Louis finished off a Buchholz set to cut the Eagles lead to two but UMW would score four unanswered points to take the third and final set, 25-18

W&L GAME NOTES
  • The Generals now fall to 10-2 on the season. 
  • W&L recorded 20 kills on 131 attempts for a .115 hitting percentage, their lowest percentage of the season. 
  • Despite the loss, the Generals still hold a 13-7 all-times series lead over the Eagles. 

UMW GAME NOTES
  • The Eagles improved to 11-0 on the season with the win, their best start in program history.
  • UMW has won the last two meetings between the Generals that have taken place inside Ron Rosner Arena. 
  • Mary Washington recorded 52 kills on 136 attempts for a .287 hitting percentage while leading every team category. 

TOP PERFORMERS
  • Bryanna Miller of UMW led all players with 14 kills on 29 attempts for a .483 hitting percentage while also digging out 12 attacks. 
  • Mary Washington's Jordan Lyons recorded 12 kills on 33 attempts for a .242 hitting percentage while Heifner of W&L recorded a team high ten kills on 38 attempts for a .184 hitting percentage. 
  • Buchholz led all players with 23 assists in three sets of action while Mary Washington's Brenna Campebll and Lauren Foley each recorded 20 assists. 
  • Hannah Livermon dug out a match-high 26 attacks while Jordan Lyons recorded her 1000th career kills as she dug out 21 attacks. 
  • McKenna Cook led the Generals with 17 digs while Mitchener dug out 16 attacks. 
  • Lauren Foley and Abby Tank of UMW each recorded two service aces in the win.

  • The Generals return to Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play on Wednesday, Sept. 27 as they travel to Ferrum College for a 6:30 p.m. matchup with the Panthers.
