FERRUM, Va. - Returning to Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play, the Washington and Lee University women's volleyball team defeated Ferrum College in straight sets on Wednesday night to remain unbeaten in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set One | 25-13 W&L
- Avery Myers kicked off the action by finishing off a Penelope Quiles assist to give W&L a early 2-0 lead.
- After the Panthers tied the match at three, the Generals went up 6-3 after a three point swing. The streak featured kills from Myers and Riley Debiec as well as a service ace from Myers.
- The Blue and White broke the set wide open as Emery Goerig started a seven point swing by finishing off an Allie Buchholz assist. This run, which featured four kills by Grace Mitchener, gave the Generals a 22-10 lead.
- Ferrum cut the lead to ten but Caroline Natwick and Mitchener recorded back-to-back kills to take the first frame 25-13.
- Mitchener led all players with six kills on ten attempts for a .600 hitting percentage while Myers and Debic each recorded three kills.
- Buchholz dished out a set-high 11 assists while Quiles recorded four.
- Quiles and McKenna Cook led all players with five digs while Buchholz dug out four attacks.
Set Two | 25-13 W&L
- The Generals took a 9-5 lead early in the set as Maddie Weller recorded a service ace while Goerig and Debic each earned a kill.
- Buchholz got the offense moving as she dished out three-straight assists to kick start another four point swing.
- W&L used yet another four point swing to take a ten point lead late in the second set. This run featured kills from McKenna Cook and two more from Myers to give the Generals a 19-9 lead.
- Kills from Ryan Taylor, Mitchener and Lillie Holcomb helped the Blue and White take the second set 25-13.
- Debiec led all players with four kills on 11 attempts for a .273 hitting percentage while Myers, Cook and Goerig each recorded three kills in the set.
- Buchholz dished out a set-high 15 assists on 31 attempts for a .484 hitting percentage.
- Michener led all players with eight digs while Quiles dug out seven attacks. Sami Kircher, Shelby Waltrip, Kenzee Chaffin and Jaycee Chaffin each dug out three attacks for the Panthers.
Set Three | 25-18 W&L
- W&L kicked off the third set with a 5-2 run as Myers and Mitchener recorded two kills while Cook recorded a service ace.
- The Blue and White broke open the set as they went on a 9-1 run to take a 15-5 lead. The Generals streak was highlighted by Debiec who recorded three kills and Mitchener who recorded back-to-back service aces.
- Two kills from Myers and a Ferrum attack error got the Generals to the 20 point mark before Goerig and Myers secured the sweep with back-to-back kills.
- Myers led all players with seven kills on 11 attempts for a .636 hitting percentage while Debiec recorded four kills on five attempts for a .800 percentage.
- Buchholz dished out another set-high nine assists while Cook dished out two.
- Cook dug out a set-high five attacks while Quiles and Buchholz each dug out three.
W&L GAME NOTES
- W&L moves to 11-2 on the season with a 3-0 record in ODAC play.
- The Generals recorded 51 kills on 122 attempts for a season-best .352 hitting percentage.
- The Blue and White led five of the six team categories including aces (6), assists (46) and digs (56).
FERRUM GAME NOTES
- With the loss, Ferrum moves to 5-8 on the season and 1-4 in conference play.
- The Panthers recorded 17 kills on 112 attempts for a .027 hitting percentage. They led the match with two total blocks.
TOP PERFORMERS
- Myers led all players with a season-high 13 kills on 22 attempts for a .591 hitting percentage. Debiec recorded 11 kills for a .476 hitting percentage while Mitchener recorded a career-high ten kills for a .348 hitting percentage.
- Kenzee Chaffin and Shelby Waltrip of Ferrum each recorded four kills for the Panthers in their three sets of action.
- Buchholz dished out a match-high 35 assists while Quiles dished out seven.
- Quiles dug out a match-high 15 attacks while Buchholz, Cook and Mitchener all recorded 11 digs.
- Sami Kircher of Ferrum dug out a team-high ten attacks while Savanna Walker dug out seven.
- Mitchener and Myers of W&L and K. Chaffin of Ferrum each recorded two service aces in three sets of action.
