LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Washington and Lee University women's volleyball team remained perfect in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play as they defeated Randolph College in straight sets on Friday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set One | 25-16 W&L
- Both teams went back and forth to start the set until Riley Debiec kicked started a five point swing with a kill. Grace Mitchener and Allie Buchholz each recorded a kill during the Generals' streak to give W&L a 7-3 lead.
- Two mistakes from Randolph and a Buchholz service ace helped the Generals take a 14-7 lead.
- W&L was the first to score 20 points as Mitchener finished off a Buchholz assist to take a nine point lead.
- After the WildCats scored three-straight points, the Generals closed out the first frame by scoring their final two points off of Randolph errors.
- Debiec led all players with four kills on six attempts for a .333 hitting percentage while Tahani Villines of Randolph recorded three kills on seven attempts for a .286 hitting percentage.
- Buchholz dished out a set-high five assists, Jayda Domench of Randolph recorded three assists.
Set Two | 25-19 W&L
- After dropping the first three points of the set, the Generals rattled off eight consecutive points to take an 8-3 lead. The streak featured kills from Avery Myers, Emery Goerig and Mitchener.
- After some back and forth action, the Generals went on a 7-1 run to swing the score to 22-14 in favor of W&L. Debiec and Mitchener each recorded two kills on the run while Goerig finished off a Buchholz assist.
- The WildCats fought back late in the set, cutting the Generals lead to five but Buchholz found McKenna Cook to give W&L a 25-19 win in the second set.
- Mitchener led all players with five kills, she attempted 15 attacks for a .267 hitting percentage. Myers and Brooklyn Finnerty of Randolph each recorded four kills in the second set.
- Buchholz dished out a set-high 13 assists while Goerig, Cook, Maddie Weller and Penelope Quiles each dished out one.
- Buchholz led all players with eight digs while Gracie Fulton of Randolph dug out seven attacks.
Set Three | 25-22 W&L
- W&L found themselves with a 5-2 lead after Myers and Goerig each recorded kills.
- The WildCats and Generals traded points with W&L holding a one point lead until they rattled off three unanswered points to take an 11-10 lead. Their run featured a Tahani Villines service ace and kills from Brooklyn Finnerty and MacKenzie Woodson.
- The Generals regained a 15-12 lead after Mitchener finished off three assists from Buchholz.
- A Lillie Holcomb service ace and back-to-back kills from Cook gave the Generals a 19-14 lead before the Wildcats cut the lead to two off a W&L error and two kills from Tahani Villines.
- Following a WildCat attack error, the Generals held a 24-22 advantage and Goerig closed out the final frame by finishing off a Buchholz assist.
- Mitchener recorded a set-high six kills on ten attempts for a .500 hitting percentage. Villines of Randolph had a team-high five kills on 11 attempts for a .273 hitting percentage.
- Buchholz dished out a set-high 13 assists while Domenech of Randolph dished out six.
W&L GAME NOTES
- W&L moves to 12-2 on the season and 4-0 in ODAC play. The Generals have swept all four of their conference opponents this season.
- The Generals recorded 40 kills on 114 attempts for a .219 hitting percentage.
- W&L led eight of the ten team categories including kills aces (4), assists (37), and digs (61).
RANDOLPH GAME NOTES
- Randolph falls to 6-8 on the season and 0-5 in conference play.
- The Wildcats recorded 32 kills on 119 attempts for a .109 hitting percentage.
- Randolph led the match in blocks (10) and points (46).
TOP PERFORMERS
- Mitchener led all players with a career-high 13 kills on 33 attempts for a .303 hitting percentage. Debiec recorded eight kills on 20 attempts for a .250 hitting percentage.
- Tahani Villines of Randolph led the Wildcats with ten kills on 26 attempts for a .231 hitting percentage.
- Buchholz dished out a match-high 30 assists, her sixth 30 assist match of the season, while digging out 12 attacks.
- Jayda Domenech dished out a team–high 14 assists while digging out eight W&L attacks.
- Quiles dug out a match-high 15 attacks while Cook recorded 12 digs. Gracie Fulton of Randolph dug out a team-high 13 attacks.
- Brooklyn Finnerty of Randolph recorded a match-high six total blocks.
